The rest of the family sat around the table. Looking up at me on Bruno's arm. Julieta and Pepa's eyes flicked between us. I rolled my eyes and patted Bruno's arm, taking a seat next to Julieta. He sat on the other side of me and hummed quietly. The passing of food, and small conversation seemed comfortable.
Señora Madrigal, of course had to say something. "I believe you told my children about your gift."
"I did Señora."
"Then let us toast to a new gift in the Encanto!"
I shook my head, and rose my glass along with the Madrigals. They may know of my gift, but they had no idea how it worked. Until I absolutely had to, I would not use it voluntarily. The dinner continued as I assumed they did normally. Everyone talked about their day and what they accomplished with their gifts. For some reason, I was a bit uncomfortable. Looking at Bruno, who ate quietly, I whispered over to him.
"So do you just talk about your 'gifts' or do you ever talk about your hobbies.
Because I am sure hearing Julieta list the many ailments she's healed gets old."Bruno laughed quietly into his food. "All work, and no play here most days."
"Well, that's boring. Don't the kids get to tell about their adventures and their friends?" I looked over at Isabela, who was demonstrating what flowers she decorated the town with. "Because I think having a little girl help out to understand responsibilities is completely different from the floral business she is describing."
Bruno had lifted his drink to his mouth and shot a look over at Dolores. She sat mouth agape at the thought of having fun instead of just working hard.
"Hm!" She squeaked. "Do you really think that, Siñorita?" She asked quietly. The rest of the table didn't know what Bruno and I were talking about, so I tried to keep the conversation light as they quieted down.
"Of course I do, I really want to hear about your friends and all the antics you get up to." I smiled at the kids who looked at me confused.
"The children are friends with everyone in Encanto!" Señora Madrigal said with a smile.
The children nodded and I shook my head. Sure, when I was their age I wasn't well liked, but I still went out and played with the other children. Bending towards Bruno I then decided to shake things up a bit.
"So I saw you scribbling in that journal." I said loudly enough that the rest of the table quieted down a bit so I was heard. "What was the idea for the telenovela you're writing? Or is it an author's secret?"
Bruno stilled as all eyes went to him. "Oh, um, author's secret." He said quietly.
"Dang, here I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait to see you become a famous telenovela writer." Bruno put his hood up as I said this, so I turned to Pepa. "Well, gonna have to wait to see what big twist your brother did in his writing. Yet, I am so curious, when you're not shaking things up with breathtaking natural phenomena, what do you enjoy doing, Pepa?"
Pepa began to nervously bite her finger as a cloud appeared above her head. "I, um..." she glanced at her husband who shrugged.
"Pepa, you have a cloud." Señora Madrigal said sternly. Her face was scrunched in confusion, as if she never thought to even ask.
"I honestly don't mind the cloud."
"Thanks." Pepa said. "I really enjoy dancing."
"Are you a part of a dance group or anything?"
"No, I'm just too busy with watering the crops and you know, kids." She said, giving a warm smile to her kids who grinned back at her.
"Well if you ever need a babysitter so you can go let the rhythm flow, don't be shy. I'm sure you deserve to have some fun." I grinned then put my sights on Julieta.
