Waking up with Mirabel was the safest reminder of the day prior. She looked to me then back at the door.
"We should go see what mami made for breakfast." She said with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. I sighed and helped her get dressed. Grabbing my guitar from the day prior I walked with her down to the kitchen.
"Buenos dias, mami!" Mirabel said in a chipper tone that I knew was faked. Julieta stilled and looked back to her. Mirabel clutched onto my hand. I knew I didn't look great, hair a mess and clothes on from the night prior. Julieta gave me an odd look, almost as if she was afraid of me.
"Hola, Mira." Julieta smiled at her daughter. "Did you sleep well?"
"Tia fought off all of my bad dreams and we sang songs together in my dream." Mira smiled at her mami. This one was less faked, because I had made sure her dream was as sweet as I could. I rustled her curls and gently nudged her towards Julieta.
"We are sorry that we fell asleep before you could say buenos noches." I said with a pointed look between Mira and Julieta. I wanted to play it off that they didn't just ignore their daughter.
"It's alright," Julieta said assuring Mirabel, "When we checked on you, you were already asleep!"
Mirabel's shoulders relaxed and she gave me a bright smile. "How did you know?!"
"Because I know your mami and papi love you soooo much!" I said and Julieta's face dropped for a split second as Mirabel gazed at me. "Now you stay down here, I have to go wake up your sleepy head tio and put away my new guitar."
"Okay, Tia." Mira said as I gave her a hug and headed to mine and Bruno's room.
I was so lost in thought that I didn't notice that something was off. Something was wrong. I worked on autopilot as I made my way up to our room. The elevator was rather slow, but I didn't think much of it. I just wanted to go seek comfort in Bruno's arms. Opening the door to our room, the first thing I noticed was the sound. Or lack of.
There was not the noise of Bruno's quiet snores or his rats begging to be fed. Fumbling for the lights I turned them on. Glancing around I didn't see him. Our bed was made and there was something gold on top of a piece of paper. Confused, I set the guitar by the door.
"Brunito!" I yelled into the hall, expecting him to pop his head out of the vision cave or bathroom. Silence.
I felt a cold chill run down my spine as I stepped forward. Walking towards our bed, I glanced around. Everything seemed to be in order. When I finally stood at the bedside, I allowed myself to look at what sat atop the piece of paper.
It took a second to process it, but there it was. His ring. His wedding band. My hand shook as I reached out and touched it. He never took it off, ever. Picking it up, I ran my fingers over it. What did this mean, it couldn't mean what I thought it did, could it?
My other hand darted out and picked up the letter. Unfolding it, I tried to read it. My eyes couldn't help my brain process the words. It took three tries before I started comprehending what I was reading.
"MI amor, mi vida,
Mama forced me to do a vision. At the center of which... Meirda. I cannot have you or Mira hurt because of me. These past few months have been terrible, everything but our wedding has caused so much pain to mi familia, to you. You deserve someone who is better, who can be better. So I left. Do not look for me, Julieta and Pepa will protect you. Let them shield you as a member of this familia. Help raise our sobrinos the correct way, the way you or I never had. If I return, which I do not plan on, then maybe we can talk about this. You deserve a man who is strong, who is the best, not just a man who tries his hardest.
