My anxieties had me so fretful that I was caught off guard when Bruno and I woke up and he whispered "Feliz cumpleaños, amor."
I looked at him completely confused. "It can't be-" I began to say and he grinned.
"Did you honestly forget your cumpleaños?!" He asked pulling me into his chest with a laugh.
"No, really, are you sure? Like I don't think today is-" I sighed and tried to pry myself away to go look at my calendar.
"I think I would know when mi esposa's cumpleaños is." He chuckled.
"I completely forgot about my cumpleaños." I said with a groan, realizing that the conversations that didn't include me made a whole lot of sense.
"The kids said that you forget nearly every year." Bruno said with a twinge of sadness in his voice. "But never again." He told me pulling me impossibly closer. "I will ensure you are celebrated properly." He pulled me into a kiss that was full of love.
A knock came at the door and I sighed, wanting to chase Bruno's lips, but giving up. "Come in." I said.
Mirabel bounded into the room with a stack of clothes. "Feliz cumpleaños, tia!" She said excitedly. "I'm just going to leave these here." She placed the stack of clothes at the foot of my bed. "I expect you to wear this today, no questions asked." She said with a grin.
"Gracias, Mirabel." I said with a soft smile.
"Oh! And Tio Bruno?" Mirabel took what looked like a ruana from the bottom of the stack, "You have to match tia today, so I made you this."
I reached down and grabbed my stack of clothes and looked at the embroidery Mirabel had done on them. Before I could praise her for her good work, she breezed back out the door, closing it behind her.
"Okay, so I have no idea what you all have got planned, but this is a rather nice surprise." I said as I actually got out of bed first.
Bruno watched as I got changed into the clothes Mirabel had embroidered and I nearly let out a happy sob. The skirt was adorned with hourglasses, as was the shirt as if it were a more casual reflection of my wedding dress that she and I embellished over a decade ago. Along the hem of the skirt were symbols that represented all of my sobrinos, and I glanced back at Bruno who smiled softly at me.
"You look beautiful." He said, getting up and throwing on some clothes as well. He didn't button up his shirt and he looked at me expectantly.
Shaking my head with a smile on my face I crossed the room and gently buttoned his shirt, pulling him close to me so I could kiss him. He hummed in appreciation as I ran my hands down his chest and wrapped my arms around him. Pulling away so I could look into his eyes, I smiled.
"You are in so much trouble, you could have just said that my cumpleaños was coming up. I was so worried."
"We wanted to surprise you, make today all about you, and the kids informed us that you wouldn't focus on your cumpleaños." He reached up and framed my face with his hands. "You deserve today and everything we do for you." He kissed my forehead and smiled. Reaching onto the bed he unfurled the ruana and grinned. Holding it up he smiled "Eh?" He showed it off.
The green ruana was adorned with shimmering hourglasses and swirls of dream like mists that matched my skirt and shirt perfectly. I smiled as he slipped it on and pulled me over to the mirror.
"Well, I think we look like quite the matching set." I said with a smile. He grinned back at me and then he pulled me out of the room.
We quickly made our way downstairs where I could smell breakfast being prepared. Glancing into the kitchen I saw Dolores, Julieta, Luisa, and Camilo preparing food. Camilo noticed me and nudged Dolores who quickly ran out of the kitchen.
