Doors and Gifts

The party was lively with Antonio's animals running amuck, the beautiful natural phenomenon Pepa summoned, and the multitude of different plant life Isa created. Bruno spun me around, one twirl missing the mark, but Isa caught me in a pile of white poppies as I tripped. Smiling at the flowers I thanked her and danced with my husband even more.

Someone eventually shoved a guitar in my hands and I played for the town. They cheered as I finished a short set of songs. The party we had was the most fun I had ever had, surrounded by family and the man I loved as they used their gifts in the ways they deemed fit.

It was when people left that we all gathered together once more, gazing to the second floor. I swallowed dryly as I took Bruno's hand. We followed the whole family upstairs and Alma stopped at what would be her door. She glanced back and then looked at her locket. Gently she touched her door handle and her visage, although looking younger and more like what she had always hoped she'd be stood in front of her. She opened the door and let out a sigh of relief, closing it to have the next person open theirs.

Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno looked at the doors that were now next to each other. Myself and the other spouses stood behind them as they looked at each other and touched the doorknobs. I smiled as the images suited them much better. Bruno's was especially intriguing, as he no longer looked angry, but content, gently holding an hourglass with his eyes closed as he sat in peace.

"Welp, let's see the damage." I said going to open his door, when another flash of light came from it. I cautiously backed up only to see myself, eyes closed behind Bruno's sitting form, swirls of mist being held up by my hands. I glanced over to Agustin and Felix who also touched the doorknobs without a similar result. They shrugged as their wives opened their doors. Bruno put an arm around my waist and and opened his door. I gasped as I saw a near replica of my house, with a few things that encompassed the warm atmosphere of Bruno's cave room. The walls were sandstone, and there was a cave to the side, but otherwise it was rather homey. I hugged Bruno's side.

"I think this is perfect." I said as I saw two red chairs with a side table between them. "We each get a favorite chair." I smiled.

The two of us closed our door and turned to the kids. They all looked to Mirabel and she looked to me and then to her parents. Bruno and I gave her a reassuring nod and she let out a deep breath. She shook her shoulders and touched her doorknob. We all watched as the magic gave way to the mural Camilo and I painted, the colorful image of Mirabel outlined in gold magic.

We all gasped as in front of Mirabel swirls of magic formed in midair. They swirled and we watched as it reformed the candle that was treasured by her abuela. Mirabel gently plucked it from its hovering place. Her eyes were tender and loving as she held the candle. She began to try and walk it back over to Alma, but Casita prevented her from doing so.

"Casita?" Mirabel asked and the casa responded with a multitude of moving tiles and Mirabel listened closely.

"I'm literally the miracle." She said in an astounded voice. Casita said something else to her and her eyes widened. "Casita says that I am the next matriarch of the Familia. That's why I wasn't given a gift, that's why this formed." She held up the candle and looked at the mural. "Why is my door all colorful though?"

"Surprise!" Camilo and I said in unison.

She laughed and looked at her name. "Should have known, that's definitely tia's handwriting."

"I wanted to give you a special door, I had no idea that this would happen." I rubbed the back of my head and Mira laughed.

"No gift is as special as me." I heard her mutter lovingly. "Because even without a gift, I have a purpose and my own goals."
