"There were cracks in Casita and Abuela didn't believe me! And Luisa is dealing with so much stress, and I need to know about Tio Bruno!" Mirabel said with emotional excitement.
"Mira, mi vida, slow down. How big were the cracks?"
"Huge, and they led to the candle. They were on the walls, floors, and ceiling. The doors flickered as well."
"When did this happen?"
"It happened after they took the family picture without me." Mirabel looked so sad in that moment.
"Mira." I said, grabbing her and pulling her to my side on the bed. "You are not lesser than the rest of your familia. Just because you didn't get a door doesn't mean you don't have a gift."
"What do you mean?" She asked, putting her head on my shoulder.
"You are the gift, every bit of you. And I do not know why they do not see it, but I do and so did your Tio Bruno." I bit my cheek to keep from showing my anger. "That was cruel that they excluded you like that. How about next time I get all of you kids over, we will take a picture of our familia."
"You would do that for me?" She asked.
"Mira, I would go to the end of this earth for any of you kids."
"Luisa too?"
"Yes, Luisa as well. I hate to hear she is struggling. I will talk to her tomorrow when I ask her to do some things for me."
"You ask her to take breaks and you make it sound like work, don't you?"
"Oh, Mira, you know me so well." I then leaned my head on hers. "So you want to know about your Tio. What brought that on?"
"Luisa said that the adults talked about his last vision. She also said that I should go up to his room, but that there was a reason it was off limits."
I sighed and got up, motioning for Mirabel to remain seated. "Let me show you some things, mi sobrina perfecta."
I swung the wardrobe doors open and reached for a wooden box that I had made with Camilo's help about eight years prior. Pulling it out, I sat it between Mirabel and myself.
"Your Tio Bruno was a wonderful man. He wrote stories that captured the imagination." I pulled out a piece of paper with sketches of Bruno writing in his journal I made him, with his hair messily up. "We started off as just good friends." I gave Mirabel the paper to look at.
"That day, we sat in near silence except for a record playing in the background. I couldn't concentrate, he looked so handsome. So I drew him. He didn't know that I was already in love with him."
"He looks so gentle." Mirabel said. "Like how Camilo painted him."
"He was, but he had a spine of steel if you pushed him far enough. He was also stubborn, but mostly he was loving. He loved your familia with all of his heart." I pulled out a picture from when Bruno and I got engaged.
"Tia, you look so happy." Mira said, tracing her hand on the frame. "This was the photo we used for your family portrait downstairs." She remembered.
"He made me very happy, but I am going to tell you something no one can know."
"Okay."
"I was given a choice by your Abuela, I either had to use my 'gift' to help the community or give up on marrying the man I love."
"You chose love." Mirabel said, reaching over to pick up the wedding photo.
"Why was it raining?"
"Because I wanted to show everyone that we didn't care about their gifts. We wanted everyone to just be themselves. And I told your Tia Pepa to do her worst."
