"Sooo?"

Kai critically munched on the warm pancakes I made for breakfast. "Not bad." He said shrugging his shoulders. My jaw fell open. "Not bad?" I repeated hysterically and took a piece of his pancakes in my mouth.

"They're fantastic dickhead!"

He smirked at me and cut a piece of the pancake with his fork. "You need maple syrup!" I turned back to the counter and grabbed the bottle of Canadian maple syrup.

"I'd prefer you with maple syrup."

I grinned at his words, while pouring some over his pancakes. "That'd be sticky." Kai chuckled and dipped the piece of dough into a puddle of the syrup before eating it.

"Much better!"

I placed my plate next to Kai and sat down to start my breakfast. Another month passed and I started loosing count. It was either November or December, but honestly I didn't care anymore. I accepted the fact that I was gonna spend my whole life here with Kai.

And you know what? It didn't even bother me that much. Yeah we fought a lot, but I was glad not to be alone and so was he. We had a long talk about this where he explained how rough it was to be alone for eighteen years. I knew that before but when he started talking about it my heart was torn.
Which father would do this to their own child?

We decided to leave Mystic Falls soon, I mean we had the whole world for ourselves. The Niagara Falls were our first spot. He agreed after I begged him and convinced him that we had nothing else to do.

"I think before we head to those waterfalls—"

"Niagara Falls"

"Whatever, we should get some snacks for the ride."

I quickly nodded and hopped off the stool. "Can you do that while I pack some stuff for us?" Kai also got up and placed our plates in the sink. "Sure, want anything special?" I told him that I wanted some hot cheetos and the next minute he was gone.

After I packed some reserve clothes, toothbrushes and the last blood bag I had, I made my way into Damons old room. All of the good CDs were hid here and if we wanted to see the world I couldn't listen to »knocking on heavens door« all the time.

As I was about to grab some random CDs something flickering in the sunlight caught my eye. The ascendant. I quickly packed the CDs into the bag and made my way upstairs again.

I didn't want to get my hopes up, but it wouldn't hurt to try one last time. With a deep breath I tried putting the pieces together and after a while I heard a click sound. Sadly, this didn't mean anything. To fully work, the gears had to move and they didn't. They never did.

"Oh come on!"

I hissed at the ancient device and tried again. Maybe I should take it with me and try on the road while Kai was driving? I put the ascendant and the loose pieces in my handbag and headed downstairs to meet Kai halfway there.

"Are you ready?" Smiling at him I nodded and we both walked out of the mansion. It was kinda hard to leave this place. We lived here now for almost half a year and made a lot of memories within these walls.

When Kai opened the boot of Damons car my eyes widened at the sight of nearly fifty cheetos bags.

"Oh my god Kai!"

"What? Are these the wrong ones?"

I laughed in surprise. "No! No they're perfect but you didn't have to get that much." His lips curled into a genuine smile. "Anything for you."

Without any hesitation I pulled him closer to press my lips against his. Even if Damon, Enzo and the rest of the world didn't care, I knew that Kai did. That was totally enough.

"Thank you!"

He chuckled slightly before closing the boot and getting in the car. I put on my seatbelt and waited for Kai to drive.

After we let Mystic Falls behind us I pulled out the ascendant. "What– God, Layla I thought we went through this." I nodded and put some pieces together. "We did but I still wanted to try, like one of those magic cubes just to distract me."

"If you wanted distraction you could've just asked."

I giggled at Kais words and enjoyed his hand stroking my thigh. I realized it in exact that moment.
I was happy.

Although we were trapped in a prison world with no way out, I was happy here. I was happy with Kai. I didn't love him, but I admired him. We matched so well it sometimes scared me. How we had the same thoughts, how we liked the same things, how much we could relate to the other.
How much we harmonized in so many different ways.

Suddenly the ascendant made another click and the gears started moving.

"What was that?"

Kai asked but he was too focused on the street to look over to me. I, somehow, lost my voice. After so many months I finally managed to repair it.

"I fixed it."

"You- What?!"

Kai immediately stopped the car causing us to fall a little forward but that was the last thing we cared about. "You did it.." He murmured under his breath, while inspecting the ascendant very carefully.

"I did it!"

We looked at each other before I pulled Kai into a tight hug. He was still reluctant about showing emotions, so it was usually me who pulled in for hugs and kisses, but if it was about sex- well that was all about his moves.
After a moment of joy I looked him dead serious in the eyes and so did he.

We were happy here, all alone with no one judging us. Going back to the real world meant giving all of our happiness up..
