17. || Massacre

I flinched opening my eyes at the sudden pain. As I saw streets, buildings and trees passing by I realized that I was still in a car with Kai. The pain.. It was just a dream. An awful Augustine dream.

My glance wandered to Kai who was about to fall asleep. Well I don't care about him but I surely didn't want to die in a car crash due to his tiredness.

"Pull over."

Kais head shot to me. "When did you wake up?" He murmured and rubbed his eyes. "Just now.. Pull over I'm gonna drive." He wagged his head. "It's fine." I sighed and opened my seatbelt. "Get some rest Kai and let me drive." He smirked through his exhaustion. "So you do care." I decided not to answer. I still wasn't completely awake and did not have the power to discuss with that idiot.

We quickly switched positions and ten minutes later I was the one driving Damons blue chevy camaro. If he would know that I'm driving his beloved car he would totally snap my neck. This car is like his child and lover at once. Actually it'd be pretty funny to do something he'd gross about in here.

Sadly I don't have a candidate to do nasty things with. Kais slight snore made me glance at him. For a moment I got lost in his looks. He wasn't even that bad, no, he was handsome. Very handsome but he was also gross, annoying and not to forget, a sociopath.

I looked at the map and tried figuring out the exact address. We already reached Oregon but it'd still take us at least two hours to get to Portland. I laid my eyes back on the road and pressed my foot harder on the gas. I just hope to find that thing and get the hell out of here.

Damon. Could it be actually true what Kai told me? Vamp boy is in love with you. His voice echoed in my head. It was too hard to think about this now. I had to sort my feelings out and then I could think about Damon as a possible boyfriend. In this moment I just wanted to get out of this hell without Kai Parker.
He still didn't tell me why a whole coven locked him up here and I think he was not planning on any soon.

A couple hours of driving later Kai was still asleep but we were finally in Portland. My whole body was aching so I grabbed the map and got out of the car. I stopped the car at a gas station and while Kai was sleeping peacefully I went into the little store and got myself a can of Red Bull. When this drink came out in 1987 I went nuts on it.

I opened the can and flushed the energy drink down my throat. Through the corner of my eye I saw a newspaper at the cash desk. The headline immediately caught my eye.

"Family massacred in Portland.."

The can in my hand fell on the ground as I had no control of my body. I grabbed the newspaper and read it carefully. It described a cruel act of murder on a friendly family and their four children.

"The oldest brother has been reported as missing from the crime scene – Malachai Parker, aged 22."

Oh my–

"Hey you spilled your drink."

Kais voice snapped me back to reality. I quickly hid the newspaper behind my back and turned to Kai. "Yea got distracted." I tried not to lose my cool but for the first time ever in this world, I was genuinely scared of Kai.

He shrugged his shoulders and headed to get himself a drink. I used the opportunity and got rid of the newspaper. He handed me a new energy drink and kept one for himself.

"Whatever, we should you know–"

Kai nodded his head back to the car. "Yea- totally." I agreed and quickly walked past him. Back in the car I pressed on the gas pedal. Kai started to describe me the exact way.

"How do you know where the ascendant is hidden?"

He took a huge sip out of the silver-blue can. I raised one brow and waited for an explanation but he just answered with an "I just know".

I stopped the car in front of this beautiful, white and big house. Kai clapped his hands and rubbed them in excitement before hopping out the car. I was afraid. No, sorry, I was terrified. It was no secret that vampires kill and yes even I had a ripper past but this was just devilish.
Although I had my humanity switch turned off, the thought of touching an innocent child would've never crossed my mind. Not even for a second!

I got out of the car and slowly got closer to the porch. On the grass were toys. A little teddy bear caught my eye, he was missing a leg and there was blood on his fluffy face. My stomach turned as I looked at Kai, who also stared at the toys on the ground.

"Alright, do your little witchy woo and get that thing."

Kai put his hands in the pockets of his pants and smiled at me. "Before I do that.." I gulped and sat down on the porch. Kai came sat down next to me. My eyes turned to him and I felt my palms sweating as he studied me.

"Tell me the truth."

He sighed and rolled his eyes. "I guess you've read the news." Kai got up and tried opening the front door. "Did you murder all those children?" The door made a click noise and the next thing I knew is that Kai showed my the way inside by spreading his arm out.

"Go have a look yourself."

I went inside and the moment I felt something wet under my shoes my mouth fell open. On the whole floor were blood puddles. The walls, the stairs, everything was covered in blood. I pressed my lips together and made my way into the living room.

I right away noticed the leg of that teddy bear. Oh god.. A bloody knife laid on the floor. I refused to believe all of this. Okay Kai was cruel, he was a literal ass, he was annoyingly sarcastic but that was just too much.

"It was a mess.."

His hot breath tingled my ear and made me jump a little. "Oh no are you scared now?" Kai grinned at me and shook his head in amusement. "God I should've brought you here earlier." I rushed out and headed right outside to the backyard with Kai following me.

"What happened to that girl who almost killed me?"

I brushed the hair out of my face and stomped my foot on the ground to express my anger and frustration. "You killed four children Kai!" He rolled his eyes and sat down on one of the garden chairs.

"You're so dramatic. Good for you I couldn't get the other three."

"You're a monster! Those kids did nothing to you!"

Now Kai got up and clenched his jaw. "How do you know? Have you heard my side of the story?"
My mouth fell open. I was living a literal shock.

"There is no excuse on earth that would justify this!"

He moved closer to me causing me to take a few steps back. "Don't you dare.." I rose my hand to keep him distant from me. "Don't come any closer." Kais whole body tensed up.

"Odessa just listen–"

As he made a step forward I lost control of my magic.

"I SAID STAY WHERE YOU ARE!"

The trees around us started shaking off their green leafs, which started floating. The leafs built a tornado around me and Kai. I was okay but he was in pain, I didn't know what I was doing to him but he was suffering badly. Kai sank onto his knees and covered his ears.

"LAYLA STOP!"

But I couldn't.. I had no idea how to stop. I looked at my hands and suddenly saw the ascendant in my right palm. Happy about my success I thought everything was over and looked to Kai but he was just about to pass out from the pain I put hin through.

"ODESSA PLEASE!"

I tried to stop the chant but nothing worked. The tornado started turning faster around us and suddenly I was out of it while Kai was still trapped in there.

Kais excruciating scream made me shiver..
