- "Mhm, me too." -
Alina, Natasha and Steve got out of the car they'd stolen, now at the location of the file. While on the drive, Alina had fallen asleep in the back seat so she didn't know what Steve and Natasha had been talking about and she didn't really care.
"This is it." Steve stated.
"The file came from these coordinates." Natasha said, putting her phone into her back pocket as they looked the place over.
"So did I." Steve uttered.
They stayed there, Natasha holding her phone up while she tried to find the file that they needed. Alina just followed around, not having anything to do apart from wait for the file to be found.
"This camp is where I was trained." Steve told them.
"Change much?" Natasha asked.
"A little." Steve answered, looking around at a specific place while Alina went up some steps to look at Natasha's phone.
"This is dead end." Alina hummed with a small sigh, spinning on her heel to look at Steve. "Zero heat signatures, zero waves, not even radio."
"Whoever wrote the file must have used a router to throw people off." Natasha spoke up and then the red heads noticed Steve looking at a small building intently. "What is it?"
"Army regulations forbid storing munitions within 500 yards of the barracks." Steve sad, leading them over to the small building. "This building's in the wrong place."
Steve pulled back his arm and broke the padlock with his shield. They pushed open the doors and went inside, walking down the stairs into the dark room. Alina moved to turn on the lights and they scanned the old shield base with their eyes.
"This is S.H.I.E.L.D." Natasha mumbled.
"Maybe where it started." Steve muttered.
"Everything is dusty." Alina mused, eyeing the dusty tables before they all walked through a door into a smaller room and saw three pictures on the wall.
"There's Stark's father." Natasha nodded at the photo of Howard.
"Howard." Steve said.
"Who's the girl?" Natasha asked and got no response.
"Old pussy?" Alina guessed with a shrug and Natasha hummed before they moved over to Steve.
"If you're already working in a secret office," Steve paused, pushing back the bookshelf to reveal a lift, "why do you need to hide the elevator?"
Natasha used her phone to scan the keypad and get the password. Once she had it, she pressed the numbers in and they wee able to use the lift. The three got in and the lift went down until they stopped at the floor. The room was dark but when they stepped into it, the lights came on and old computers and large tapes were in the room.
"This can't be the data point. This technology is ancient." Natasha stated.
"Use that." Alina pointed and Natasha looked down at the USB port which was very modern compared to the rest of the technology around them.
Natasha pushed it in and more light flickered on, tapes around them spinning while the computers flicked on too. Alina's eyes snapped towards an old camera when she heard it whirring and she saw it move upwards.
INITIATE SYSTEM? the computer typed out.
"Y-E-S spells yes." Natasha murmured as she typed YES into the computer. "Shall we play a game?" She imitated a voice and got no reaction from Steve or Alina. "It's from a movie that was really-"
"I know, I saw it." Steve nodded.
"Mhm, me too." Alina muttered, eyeing the camera above the computer which was pointed at Steve. The computer started to crackle with green.
"Rogers, Steven, born 1918." The computer said before it turned to Natasha. "Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna, born 1984." The camera then turned to Alina. "Shostakov, Alina, born 1987."
"It's some kind of recording." Natasha stated, eyeing the glitchy face on the computer screen.
"I am not a recording, Fraeulein." The computer shot back. "I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945. But I am." An image of Dr. Zola appeared on a smaller computer.
"You know this thing?" Natasha questioned.
"Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull." Steve said, walking around the computer. "He's been dead for years."
"First correction, I am Swiss. Second, look around you, I have never been more alive." Zola retorted. "In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind, however, that was worth saving, on 200,000 feet of databanks. You are standing in my brain."
"Отвратительный." Alina grimaced. (Disgusting)
"How did you get here?" Steve asked.
"Invited." Zola answered.
"It was Operation Paperclip after World War II." Natasha started. "S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited German scientists with strategic value."
"They thought I could help their cause." Zola chimed in. "I also helped my own."
"HYDRA died with the Red Skull." Steve stated.
"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place." Zola responded.
"Prove it." Steve ordered.
"Accessing archive. HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realise was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded, and I was recruited. the new HYDRA grew. A beautiful parasite inside S.H.I.E.LD. For 70 years, HYDRA has been secretly feeding crisis, reaping war, and when history did not cooperate, history was changed." Zola explained as they watched the sides flicker through, The Winter Soldier being shown on it.
"That's impossible. S.H.I.E.L.D. would have stopped you." Natasha denied.
"Accidents will happen. HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom, to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA's new world world order will arise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your life. A zero sum." Angered, Steve smashed the computer with his fist but Zola just appeared on a smaller screen. "As I was saying..."
"What's on this drive?" Steve demanded.
"Project Insight requires insight. So, I wrote an algorithm." Zola said.
"What kind of algorithm? What does it do?" Natasha questioned.
"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it." The doors started to close and Steve threw his shield at them but they closed before he could stop it, his shield flying back to him.
"Steve, A, we got a bogey. Short range ballistic. 30 seconds tops." Natasha explained when he phone beeped.
"Who fired it?" Steve asked.
"S.H.I.E.L.D." Natasha replied, shocked.
"Oh, wow. This is going great." Alina remarked sarcastically.
"I am afraid I have be stalling, Captain. Admit it." Alina grabbed the USB. "It's better this way. We are, both of us, out of time."
Steve pulled a grate off the floor and Natasha and Alina headed towards him, jumping down with him when a missile hit the building. Steve held the shield above their heads to protect them from the falling stone.
