SIDE EFFECTS

Between the painkillers, the pills to sleep like a baby, and the ones to take away the hallucinations, Nora was experiencing a certain amount of side effects that weren’t exactly easy to live with.

The first one being that she didn’t exactly know when she was using the ring or not, or if the ring was using itself. Things around Nora had a tendency of bursting into flames for no reason.

That was why Wong and Stephen immediately took her out of the hospital and forced her to stay in New York with them until it was under control. Since this place was everything but unable-to-walk friendly, she was spending her days in her room. Some things were now easier, like the visits from her friends and family.

But she barely saw them at all, since she was now sleeping most of the time.

She could be asleep 18 hours a day, the last 6 happening in the middle of the night. And it was rather boring, since everyone else was sleeping. She called Tobias and Julie a few times, knowing that they were living in a whole other timezone, but they were both pretty busy already. Since Nora couldn’t work and Tobias finally stood up for himself and said that this job wasn’t for him, Julie took Nora’s place and he was only assisting her.

But tonight, as she was obsessively scrolling through all the articles concerning this mysterious wildfire in Canada for the hundredth time, she had company. Stephen was already there when she woke up. He said something like ‘you’re driving the cloak crazy’ and stayed with her, half asleep on the armchair by her bed.

“Oh, that’s bad,” Nora breathed out, her eyes glued to her phone. Stephen looked up and gave her a questioning look. “The Canadian government asked for the Avengers’ help,” she said, reading the title of the article. She quickly went through the content and finally let out a relieved sigh. “Oh, that’s good. Tony Stark said ‘not my problem’.”

“Isn’t it his job to look into these things ?” Stephen asked.

Nora shrugged. “I don’t know, but I’m not mad that he doesn’t want to go take a look.” She looked up and frowned. “But I thought the UN was in charge of Avengers things ? I don’t want to have the UN on my back.”

He slightly rolled his eyes. “Maybe the all powerful Tony Stark doesn’t have to do what they say.”

“Either way, I’m glad he’s staying out of it. The further I am from these people, the better.”

“He wouldn’t find anything,” Stephen said with a proud smile. “I did a good job at hiding any trace of your presence there.”

“He has some super tech.”

“I have magic.”

“Good point,” she admitted. “By the way,” she added, trying to stay focused on her phone, “did Mordo say anything when you saw him ?”

He looked up and shook his head. “Gave me the book, asked me if you’d survive, and left.”

“That’s nice of him, though. Even after I told him I’d kill him, he still showed up.”

Stephen dropped his book and stared at her. “You said what ?”

Another relatively bothering side effect of all the pills Nora was taking. She had no idea if what she was thinking in her head was also coming out of her mouth. Most of the time it was about small things, but sometimes it was about more important stuff. Like threatening to kill people.

“No, you didn’t understand,” she quickly said. “Of course I didn’t-”

“You threatened to kill Mordo. Are you out of your mind ? Why would you do that ?”
