TRYING TO MAKE FRIENDS

As Dr Banner was, once again, telling his story, Nora stayed in a corner and tried to understand everything that she didn’t know. And the fact that the good doctor had been missing for two years helped. She was just as confused as he was most of the time but tried not to show it. As it turned out, not everything she read on the internet was true, and she was regretting ever showing her face to the government.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket. Pepper. Nora realized she didn’t tell her anything, but there wasn’t much of anything to say anyway. She probably knew already about all the insect people.

I talked to Ross. Glad to know you changed your mind.
You already know I can’t send you there, I’m sorry.

I’ll find another way.
Can you do something about the journalists ? They’re blocking everything where Stephen used to work, doctors still need to do their job..

I’ll see what I can do.
I took care of the ones with your family, they should be gone soon.

Thanks.
And I’m really sorry about earlier.

We’re all going through a lot. Call me if there’s anything new.

Nora put down her phone but received another text.

We’re still trying to contact them.

Nora took a second to check on her body. Basically, she was exhausted. A whole day of work and a fight with crazy aliens wasn’t exactly how she initially planned her day. She took something for the pain in her chest, but she could still feel it. According to Christine, if anything was broken, she’d know it.

At least the Flames seemed to have completely calmed down since the aliens left and she wasn’t at risk of roasting everything around her. One day they’d have to understand how this ring was able to summon fire without even asking for Nora’s permission. It was getting a little tiring to be fighting herself whenever she was supposed to fight other people.

From everything Nora gathered so far, Vision was the only one in the room with a bit of common sense. Which was rather funny, since he was also the only one without a brain. When they all wanted to protect the stone on his forehead, he knew that the only solution was to destroy it.

“I’ve been giving a great deal of thoughts about this entity in my head,” he calmly said. “I think if it were exposed to a sufficiently powerful energy source, something very similar to its own signature, then its molecular integrity could fail,” he added, looking at Wanda.

“And you with it,” she said. “We’re not having this conversation.”

“One life can’t stand in the way of defeating Thanos.”

“But it should,” Rogers argued. “We don’t trade lives.” He sighed and looked at Nora. “You said your friend would protect his stone with his life, right ? How much time do you think we have ?”

She looked up and stared at him. “You didn’t just ask me how long it’ll take Stephen to die.” Nora left her chair and walked closer to him, ignoring Rhodes’ request to go back to her seat. “I think there’s a misunderstanding here. Are we only not trading the lives of your friends ?” she asked. Somehow, this man wasn’t that scary anymore. He was only one more to add to the list of people who only cared about Tony Stark. And Nora was tired of these people. “Here’s what I can tell you. You and this stone are the only things standing between Thanos and Stephen. If it comes down to it, I’ll burn that stone myself, even if you all die with it.”

Wanda took a step forward and tilted her head to the side. “You can try.” Nora looked at her. They clearly had a similar problem regarding their eyes, and the girl’s hands were surrounded with some kind of red magic.
