Reader's POV
On my way to the agency I pondered upon the question that many may be asking themselves.
Who is doing this and what do they have to gain?Slaughtering innocent kids, taking them away from their families, possibly torturing them...This is madness, makes me wonder why police aren't trying harder.
I will be asking Rowan that myself whilst in my interview.I sighed while looking out of my window, taking in my new surroundings. The city was a little more hectic, cars whooshing by in a hurry, traffic was dense.
But needless to say I wasn't against this, it gave me the chance to look around at the buildings and trees.Ten minutes passed and we were finally outside of the building.
It had a big sign on the top.
"Stoneburrow CI division." I read to myself as I took in a deep breath.Mustering the courage to go inside, the waiting area was rather fancy which is nothing like I had expected. I approached the front desk and smiled.
"Hi, I have an interview with Rowan at 8:00am." I said in a polite tone while giving her a tender smile.
The receptionist was a beautiful young blonde woman, her skin was flawless and her outfit was amazing.
"Oh yes of course, take a seat I will inform him right now sweetheart." she said in a sweet tone as she pointed at the velvet chairs.I nodded and walked over to sit, I was not expecting her to be so kind. Normally the receptionists I meet always have an attitude or don't want to acknowledge my existence.
"Mrs. L/N?" the receptionist asked."Yes?" I said as I stood up and approached the desk once again. She stood up from her chair and she motioned me to follow her. Doing so she led me to the elevator and we both walked in.
"Be a dear and press number five." she said while giving me a smile, she was weirdly nice at this point. It was starting to creep me out a little, I pressed the button and as the elevator doors closed I felt tense.
"I just want you to know that in this place we work well pass the police recommended curfew most of the time. If you want to be a Private investigator or from our general investigation department...You have to be ready to put your life on the line."
The young lady mentioned as the elevator went up slowly.I raised an eyebrow while looking at her.
"Miss, I am well aware that I will be putting my life on the line at times. But that's why I want this job so bad, it's always been my passion to bring criminals to justice." I stated with determination. As if she was surprised with my answer she nods, giving me a small smile.
"You are wonderful, I hope you get the job." She said before the elevator doors opened.I smiled feeling grateful for her comment, she made me feel less nervous than I was previously.
If everyone is as sweet as her, I will enjoy working here. She motioned for me to follow her and she led me through a hall way, before stopping in front of the door with a golden name plate.
She knocks softly before speaking. "Mr. Rowan, you're 8 o'clock is here.""You may enter." A strong male tone spoke, causing me to tense up briefly.
His voice was a little different from the one I heard on the phone. The young lady opens the door and smiles while letting me into the room.
His office was magnificent, velvet chairs, dark wood desk, white shades, some lovely plants."Thank you Chelsea, I sent you an email. Whenever you get the chance I need you to review it."
The man at the desk spoke, his voice as smooth as velvet...what am I saying?!I shook my head and took a deep breath, gathering my composure.
"Please take a seat." He said as he pointed at the seat in front of his desk.I nodded as I took a seat, the lovely young lady closed the door and left us alone.
Oh god...I don't want to embarrass myself; I thought as I fiddled with my thumbs briefly.I looked back up seeing him smiling at me. "May I have your resume?" he reached his hand out flashing a charming smile. I nodded handing him a small file I had brought, he took it instantly reviewing the papers inside.
"I see that you graduated with honors. Top of your class, the only female too." He spoke softly as he flipped through the papers. I gave out a small sigh of relief seeing as though he was interested in my abilities and not my appearance.
He soon closes the folder and he placed it down on his desk. "So miss L/N, you are hired." he said in a tender tone of voice.
A smile quickly spread across my lips as I was overjoyed with the news. I did it, I actually did it; I thought to myself while I maintained my composure as best as possible. "Thank you so much sir, you won't regret it." I said sweetly.
"How quick can you start?" he asked as he raised an eyebrow briefly. I thought about it for a moment but why wait any longer.
"I can start as soon as today, if needed of course." I answered with a soft tone of voice. He cracked a chuckle before shaking his head.
"You are rather eager, I like that. That is actually perfect because..." he paused and he started looking around his desk, I watched him curiously wondering what he was looking for or what he wanted me for.
He pulls up a red folder marked as evidence and another one marked as urgent. "Given your set of skills I need you to work on something for me. But you must not tell anyone." he stated as he handed me the folder.
"I need you to look into this investigation that police have failed to take seriously. You will be a sort of private investigator, therefore everything must be on the down low." he stated as he gathered some more papers and handed them to me.
I nodded taking everything he gave me. "You have my word. Where would be best to look at these without risk of others snooping?" I asked raising an eyebrow briefly.
"You may use the desk I was going to use for a personal assistant but I couldn't find one that would not flirt with me." he mentioned as he pointed at the good sized desk behind me.
I nodded and stood up. "Understandable, I will get right on this sir." I said as I made my way over to the desk and took a seat.
"You can call me Rowan, as long as you can remain cordial with me. This is merely a work relationship nothing else." he mentioned before he began flipping through papers. I nodded and huffed briefly.
"Of course, I would never mistake a professional setting for a romantic one. You can call me Y/N." I said shaking my head briefly. It was never my intention to date my boss, I've read to many romance novels. I know how bad it can go. I took a deep breath before I opened the first folder and my eyes instantly widened.
Oh god...
