Monday morning, 7:30am.
Portland, Maine.
Luna sat staring at the red traffic lights as she listened to the engine hum below her. The faint sounds of people honking their car horns and shouting was muffled out with the windows. The quick and frequent changing of her radio stations however, was persistent and loud as her little brother fiddled around with the buttons.
"Oh my gosh...Kyle! Please pick a station and stick to it." Luna sighed as she turned to him where he sat in the passenger seat.
"I can't find anything good." Kyle mumbled as he shook his head. "Are you sure you forgot the AUX cord?" He quickly turned around and searched the back seats.
"Yes. You left it on the living room table." Luna nodded as the green light appeared. Putting her foot down, they were driving down the road once again. "You were late as usual." She then added with a smug smile.
Kyle rolled his eyes as he looked out his own window. "Why does school have to start at eight on a Monday anyway?" He then shrugged and sighed.
"I thought you would've gotten used it by now, you're a sophomore." Luna chuckled to herself as she pulled into their high school. The large letters of PHS stood proud above the main doors.
"You never get used to that." Kyle huffed with a small laugh.
Luna nodded as she pulled into a parking space. "Nah, you never do kid. Welcome to the start of the rest of your life." She stopped the car and then patted her brothers shoulder as they both laughed. They exited the car and Luna ducked into the back to pull out her English folder and backpack.
As Kyle grabbed his own he was called on by a couple of voices.
"Morning boys." Luna sighed as she looked towards Elliot and Wyatt. The two of them and her little brother had been best friends since preschool.
"Morning Luna!" Wyatt grinned and waved enthusiastically. If you didn't know him, you would think he was putting it on but he was genuine.
"Okay, you boys don't into too much trouble." Luna sighed as she patted her little brother's shoulder. He was only fifteen, yet his height said different.
Luna crossed over the parking lot and headed towards the main entrance of the school. Just as she reached the doors, she heard running footsteps and an out of breath huff in her ear.
"Good Morning!" Kathleen beamed. Luna and Kat had been friends since middle school. They got paired together in the 8th grade for a project and surprisingly became really good friends. They grew closer over the years.
"What class do you have first today?" Kat asked as they got to their lockers and fumbled with the combinations.
"Double English." Luna smiled.
"I think you're the only one who loves that." Kat laughed to herself as she pulled out her Biology textbook.
"Isn't that kind of the point? I'm going to be majoring in it next year." Luna took a rather shaky breath.
Kat narrowed her eyes and shook her head. "And when you're published in the next few years, I better be first invited to your party!" She winked and nudged her shoulder.
"I'll write you the invitation myself." Luna laughed as the bell rang.
"Sealed with the little wax brand?" Kat grinned.
"Yes. With a wax stamp." Luna shook her head with a smile.
