Harry

I noticed

I noticed

I noticed

His voice. The look. The words. The meaning behind them. The seriousness.

"Thank you" a tear rolled down my cheek

"You have to let me in, Harry" he said as he scooted closer

Of course, I flinched.. He slowed down and gently set his hand ontop of mine

"Let me in. Tell me about yourself. What's home like? What do you do in your spare time? You know, we'll start off simple"

The amount of care in his voice made my throat tighten and more tears fall

No one had ever looked at me with this level of concern.

"I.. I'm 16. I'm from Chesire. I.. I worked in a bakery to get out of my house before I moved here"

I could tell he wanted to ask why I wanted out of my house.. but he chose a more simple question... I was honestly grateful

"What was the bakery like?"

"It was.. home." I admitted softly

"Home. That's good. You liked it there." he nodded as he spoke softly to me

"Yeah.. it was my get-away"

"From...?" he asked cautiously

"Drunk mom" Just as I spoke, a broken sob escaped my throat, "and-" my voice broke again

"Baby steps, Harry.. Shh" he soothed me and gently rubbed the top of my hand

I caught my breath and tried to understand why I was opening up to a boy I'd just met

Maybe because he's the only person who I could be friends with that actually could care?

"Angry Dad" I finally got out the last part

"So.. did you bake or were you the cashier?" he asked with the smallest smile

"Cashier" I smiled a little too.. a true- but tiny- smile

"and now.. are you still with those parents?" he asked after a second of joy

"No.. my grandma."

"What's she like?"

"Bakes cookies. Cooks really nice meals. Complains about the news man." I smiled a little wider this time

"And.. does she know?" he asked as he gently turned my hand over

"n-no"

I knew what he was doing. He was working me to a point where he could examine the cuts

"I'm not- I don't know you.. w-well enough" I sputtered out

"okay. Okay, I understand" he nodded a little and just set our palms together and gently rubbed cirles with his finger on my thumb

"Okay.. okay, so.. My pops left when I was really young. He was mean, too. He 'fell in love' with some skinny young woman- she was just there for the money. But mom and I were fine. We both had to work- sure. But she got a good business offer down here. We got a house. We're okay now"

I nodded

"My.. my grandma actually just passed away" he added quietly

"I was quite close to her, if I'm honest.. She made amazing brownies with a sweet glaze over them. It.. it hurt. a lot."

"I'm so sorry"

"It's okay. I got this little necklace with some of her ashes in it. I keep it in a little case so I don't ever lose it."

I tightened my grip on his hand

Before either of us could say anything else, a shout filled the air

"HEY! We've been looking everywhere for you kids!" the principle

Our hands flew apart and we both grabbed a bag

He was about 20 feet away

I looked at Louis- Probably wondering the same thing he was...

then, silently, we both made a decision to run for it
