chapter 10: how could you? (part one)

Steve ~
I wake up laying next to Eddie and watch him look so peaceful while he sleeps. I get up and go get us breakfast from the cafe and bring it back to the room where I see Eddie stretching. "Good morning" I say smiling at him. He doesn't say anything back. "I got you breakfast. It's waffles and bacon?" He looks away.

"Eddie what's wrong?" I ask, because he looked angry. "You wouldn't understand." He says fidgeting with his thumbs. "Yes I would Eddie. What is it?" I ask. "I got a call last night from my uncle. My dad's out of jail. He's going to come for me." "What do you mean he's gonna come for you?" I asked. He hit me and my mom until my mom left. Then, after she left, he just started hitting me. One day, I punched him back and called the police. While they were taking him away, he looked me straight in the eyes and said 'When I get out, you're dead.' Well he's out so consider me dead." "I'm not going to let him any where near you." I said reaching to hold his hand.

He pushed it away. "No, i'm not going to let him near me. I need you to leave. I'm not going to chance you getting hurt." "No. I'm not going anywhere." "JUST GO STEVE." He yelled, with tears in his eyes. "Just go. Stay away from me. I'm getting discharged today so I'm going home. Don't follow me. Don't call me. Don't talk to me okay?" Tears started streaming down my face. "S-so this is it?" I asked. "Steve, I love you but I need you to stay away from me." He grabbed my hand and started to cry a little bit. "I'm so sorry Steve but if you love me, you will stay away from me." I nodded and grabbed my bag of stuff and called robin to ask her to pick me up.

She said she would be here in 5 minutes. I hung up and looked back at Eddie one last time. He had tears rolling down his face and looked away from me as if the sight of me pained him. I went outside and saw Robin's car. She parked and ran up and hugged me. "It's okay Steve." We got in her car and I explained everything to her. His dad, the call he had gotten. Everything. "Steve, I- I'm so sorry." I looked out of the window. "He still loves me right?" I asked quietly. "Of course he still loves you Steve. He's doing this to protect you. I would do the same thing to Nancy."

I was mad at him. I know he was trying to protect me but I wanted to protect him and he thought I couldn't. Robin drove us to School and parked. I got out and walked in. "It's gonna be okay Steve" Robin said while patting my back and going the other direction. I see Eddie walking in the hallway. He already got discharged? And he's back at school? I stop to look at him and he sees me and starts to walk the other way. I walk to my class and sit down next to Nancy. Eddie walks over and sits down next to me. I wanted to hug him so bad. I mean he basically let me off with 'if you love me, let me go.'

I tried to ignore him and focus on what the teacher was saying but, the words kept repeating in my head. "I'm so sorry Steve but if you love me, you will stay away from me." I hated it. It was like that one sentence was engraved in my brain and I couldn't get it out. After the bell rang it was lunch. I saw Dustin waving at me to come sit down. Then, I saw Eddie tell him something and he put his hand down.

I went and sat with Robin and Nancy. "Hey guys." I say, sitting down. "Oh hey Steve!" Nancy says. "Hey dingus." Robin says. While Nancy and Robin were debating about the mall or something, I was staring at Eddie. He looked fine. He was laughing and stuffing bread into his mouth. Robin interupted me and pinched my arm. "Ow!" I yell.

"Stop looking at him Steve." Robin said. "But-" "But no. Stop staring and tell Nancy that the mall is a terrible place to go for a date." "Me and edd- I went on a date to the movies? The mall really isn't the best place for a date." "See? Even Steve agrees. The movies are definitely better." "Whatever you say Robin." Nancy says playfully. I forgot about Eddie until lunch was over and I had to go to my next class.

I walked past Eddie trying to show him I was fine. I felt his eyes following me down the hallway until I was out of sight. I sat down in my class and started to read the book we were reading. Once the bell rang, I walked outside and waited for Nancy. I sat down on a bench and read a magazine that I had got from Dustin a few weeks ago. As I was reading I looked over to see Eddie standing in front of his van staring at me.

"You like the view?" I yelled, not taking my eyes off of the page I was reading. I glanced over quickly and saw him get in his van and drive off. I'm trying to act like everything's fine but, it's not. God, I hope this ends soon. I don't think I can act like nothing happened for another day.
