chapter 14: burn it all down

Steve ~
While Eddie's driving to the gate in the woods, I start to overthink. What if one of the kids gets hurt? Will almost died because of the upside down. "Will I don't know if you should go down there." I say. "I'm going down there." Will replies. "Steve, we're not kids anymore. If you're really this scared, maybe Eddie should drop you off back at Mike's house." Dustin says. I turn and look back at all of the kids. "You want to know why I'm 'scared'? I'll tell you. Last time we went into the upside down, I almost died! If one of you dies, It would be on me. I'm supposed to make sure you are safe and if I screw that up, I will never forgive myself and, neither will your parents. So yes Dustin, I am scared."

I start shaking my leg and Eddie places one of his hands on it. "We'll be fine Steve. If that does happen, which it won't because we have been to the upside down countless times, but if it does, we won't let that fall on you." Mike said. I shake my head and Eddie parks in front of the woods. "Okay, everyone grab a pair of goggles and a mask." I grab the box of gasoline and other flammable stuff and tell each of them to grab something from it. I grab a can of gasoline and my bat. I pull my bandana over my face and, put my goggles on. Everyone follows after me. I throw my bat down through the gate and the can of gasoline.

I look back at them. Eddie stands across from me.  "Okay, Max come here." I say. I grab her hand and help her through the gate. I jump down then, help the other kids through the gate. Eddie jumps down last. "Okay. Everyone good?" I ask. Everyone nods then I look around. "I can feel him. He's not dead." Will says, touching the back of his neck. I look around and see something move behind us. "Behind you!" I yell, as I hit a demogorgon with my bat.

El lifts it up and throws it. We start walking in the other direction. "Last time it started with the lab. If we want to find out what happened, we need to go there." "What do you mean last time?" Eddie asked, nervously.  "Oh there was a power outage about two years ago, and we had to close the gate that was in the  Hawkins lab." Max said.

"But the mind flayer had will last time." I say. "So if we're talking about the mind flayer being alive again somehow, he has to have a host." "Who would that be?" Eddie asked. "He may not have one yet." Will said, sounding worried. "I told you this was a bad idea. If he picks one of you as a host, you could die!" I yell.

Eddie ~
While Steve's too busy telling everyone that this was a bad idea, everyone stops. "What is that?" I ask, trembling. "The mind flayer." Henderson said slowly. "How is it still alive?" Steve asked. "Because Vecna is still alive. As long as he's alive, The mind flayer is still alive." Mike said. "Shit." Max commented. Everyone started to walk forward. "Woah. We're going near that thing?!" I yelled, running after them.

"He's right. We need a plan." Steve looked at the kids. "Alright. Henderson, Mike, you're with me. We're going to the creele house and we're going to burn it down. That should kill Vecna right?" Steve asked. "Statistically speaking, if fire didn't kill him last time, it probably won't kill him this time." Henderson stated. "But, it would buy us some time to get a better plan. He had to recover before he started to attack again so we would have a couple days to come up with a plan." Mike added.

"Okay. Max, El, and Will you're with me. I guess we're going to Hawkins lab?" "Yes. Go see if another gate is open. If things go south, go back to Hawkins. Oh, and here." Steve handed me a walkie. "So we can communicate." I nod. "Things go south, get out of there. Don't do what you did last time Steve. You two make sure he doesn't stay when it gets bad. Pull him, drag him back to Hawkins, if you have to." Me and the three other kids start walking towards the lab.

"Okay, when we get in there, if there's a gate open, how do we close it?" I asked. "El closed it last time." Max looked at Eleven. "Do you think you can do it again?" "Yes." El answered.  I look over at Will. "You good kid?" I ask him. "Yeah I think so." We walk in the building and start to look around. "AHHHHHH" I scream as I jump back.  El throws the demogorgon into a wall. "You should have seen your face." Max says with a laugh. I give her a death stare and keep walking.

"So where was this gate last time?" I ask. "Follow me." El replies. She starts walking and we follow. "Right here." I look in shock as I see a giant gate on a wall, covered with vines. "It's open?" Max asked. "Max?" I call her name. "Yeah." She looks over at me. "Help me pour gasoline on the walls in case we have to light this baby up like a christmas tree." I say. She pats El's back and walks over to me. Will stands next to El and watches as she puts her arm up starts to close the gate. I grab the walkie and say "Gate's almost closed. Do you copy? Over." Nothing. Eleven almost finishes closing the gate until she put her arm down and looked at me.

I see that mind flayer thing and scream "RUN!" I yell into the walkie "GO BACK TO HAWKINS! THE MIND FLAYER IS AFTER US!" Max says into the walkie. "WHAT? WE COPY!" I grab the walkie from max and we are running as I yell "Are you guys in Hawkins yet?!" Silence. "Come on!" I hold El up as she climbs through the gate. Max stands up on the picnic table and climbs through and then Will. "Are they up there?" "No." "Okay stay there!" I start running to the creele house. I see the three of them running towards me. "HURRY UP!" I yell as I turn around and start running back to the gate. I help Wheeler climb through, then Henderson.

"Steve come on!" I scream. I pick him up bridal style, and throw him through the gate. I climb up, and through the gate. I lay on the ground and Steve helps me up. "So the gate wasn't closed?" Henderson asked. "Oh sorry Henderson, we were just busy being CHASED BY THIS GIANT DUST MONSTER!" I scream. "It's not dust it's -" "We don't need your science lesson right now, Dustin." Max said. We walked back to the car and sat there for a minute. "We need to figure out how to close the gate." Wheeler said. I run my head, thinking. "We need bait." I said, sighing.
