chapter 13: red slushies

Eddie ~
I messed up. I've been crying all night. I finally fell asleep around 3am. I woke up and checked my watch. It was 11?! I remembered it was a Saturday so I didn't have to go to school. I opened my door and looked over to see Steve's door still shut from the night before. I sigh and walk downstairs and grab some pizza from the box that was in the fridge.

I walk back to the living room and see Steve putting his sneakers on, wearing a tank top and some sweatpants. I stop walking. "Steve. I'm sorry for yelling at you last night. I was just really worked up. I didn't mean to yell at you. I'm not mad at you." He ignored me. I walk closer and stand in front of him. "Steve I'm-" "It's fine. Excuse me." He says, irritated. "Steve really, I'm sorry. I didn't mean -" "I said it's. Fine. Leave me alone please."

He put his walkman on and walked out of the door. He hates me now. Great. I look through the bag of clothes that my uncle brought me last night, and find something to wear. I get in the shower and start overthinking. When I get out, I hear something come from Steve's room. A familiar voice. I walk in and see his walkie lying on his bed. I grab it and listen. "Steve? We haven't heard from you in a few days. Are you okay? Over." It's Henderson.

"He's fine. He's just been busy" I say. "Eddie? Oh um okay." I put the walkie back on the bed. I walk back downstairs and Steve walks in the front door. He looked sweaty and his face was puffy and swollen from his black eye but his nose was red like he had been crying. "I don't want to fight." He said, setting down his walkman. "I don't want to either. I really didn't mean to yell at you." "It's okay Eddie. I know you were upset." He pulled me into a hug.

"You definitely need to shower." I say jokingly. "Do I smell that bad?" He said laughing. "I love you but, you smell terrible." I gave him a quick kiss and he ran upstairs. While he was in the shower, I left some of my rings on his bed for him and drove to the 7/11. I walked in and got two cherry slushies and a bag of chips. I set everything on the counter. "Is that everything?" "Yup." The cashier started to ring everything up. "$5.77" I hand her the money and grab the slushies and the bag of chips. I put the slushies in the cupholders and drove back to the house.

When I got home, Steve was on the phone with someone. I walk next to him and he holds up his index finger. I see my rings on some of his fingers and I nod and set the slushies down on the table and sit down. I prop my feet up on the table and start slurping down my slushy. Steve finally hangs up the phone and looks at me. "I haven't got accepted to one college yet. I was on the phone with a college. They said they 'weren't looking for someone like me' to join their college." "It's okay love, they don't know what they're missing!"

He smiled and walked over to me. "I'm guessing this is for me?" He pointed at the red slushy on the table. "Yeah. I see you're wearing my rings." "Oh yeah. they were on my bed when I got out of the shower." He said, admiring them. "I'm boreddd." I said. Right after I said that, the phone started ringing. Steve walked over to the phone and and answered it. "Hey." I heard mumbling over the phone. "You need me to babysit the kids? Alright." I heard some yelling and laughing on the other end of the phone. "Okay, okay. Me and Eddie are gonna come over." He hangs up the phone and grabs my hand.

"It's your lucky day! Come on." He says. We walk to the car and get in. "Babysitting? Really?" "Hey! I'm a damn good babysitter." "Steve Harrington, you never fail to surprise me." I say with a laugh. As we're driving, "Are we just going to stay there with them all day?" "Yeah? That's how you babysit?" "Whyyy?" "Because Joyce and Hopper asked us to." I sigh.

Steve ~
"Well, it's better than not doing anything all day." I say. "Yeah I guess so." Eddie says dramatically. I park in the Wheelers' driveway and knock on the door. Henderson opens the door. "STEVEEEE" "HENDERSONNNN" I say back, playfully. Me and Eddie walk in and see Hopper and Joyce talking to Ted and Karen Wheeler. Hopper and Joyce walk over to me. "Thank you both so much for watching them." Joyce said sounding worried. "We have to go speak to Murray. Hawkins had a blackout last night. I don't think it was just a normal power outage." Hopper said with a serious tone. I pinch the bridge of my nose.

"Ted and Karen don't know but, they're going somewhere and they told us to drop the kids off call you." Joyce said. "Do they know?" I ask, looking over at the kids. "Yeah, so make sure they don't try to do anything dumb." Hopper said, sounding stressed. Ted and Karen leave and so do Hopper and Joyce. "What does he mean more than a power outage?" Eddie asks me quietly. "The upside down." I say. "We have to do something!" Max yells. "Woah, woah woah. We are not leaving this house." I say. "Mom of the year." Eddie mumbles. "Hey! Real mature!" I look over at him.

"I promised to keep you all safe. That's exactly what I'm going to do." "Steve, keeping us safe, is saving Hawkins! If our town isn't safe then, neither are we!" Mike says, sarcastically. "No means no." El floats the keys out of my hand. "HEY! give me those!" "Hey kid, toss em' to me, I'll drive." I look over at Eddie. "Really?! Don't encourage them!" El hands him the keys and everyone starts walking out of the door. I pinch the bridge of my nose.

"Come on Steve." Will says. "Damn it! no one ever listens to me!" I say while I run after them and get in the car. "Hey Steve, do you still have that bat?" Henderson asks. "Yeah why?" "We have to go to the upside down and see what that power outage was about." "NO! look, I already broke my promise to your parents. I'm not going to chance any of you getting hurt." "In the woods?" Eddie asked. "Yes." El answered.

"Eddie don't you dare." "Okay let's vote. All in favor of saving Hawkins?" Will, Mike, Dustin, Max, El and Eddie raise their hands. "All in favor of staying at the house and watching Hawkins get destroyed?" "Joyce and Hopper are going to save Hawkins." "But don't you want to help them?" Eddie asks me. "We need gas and a lighter." I sigh. "I have a lighter." Eddie says. "Okay kids, go find masks and goggles and as much flammable stuff as you can." They all nod and run inside.

"I'm sorry Steve but I'm with the kids on this one." "If one of them gets hurt, it's gonna be on you. You can tell their parents how you decided that we were going to the upside down. Oh and you know last time we went to the upside down, I almost died! What if that happened to one of them? What would we do then?" "You know they're going to get there, one way or another. It's better if we're with them."

The kids put boxes of alcohol and gasoline in the trunk and max and El put a box of goggles and masks that they found in the trunk too. "God, no one ever listens to me! This isn't a good idea!"
