chapter 17: on edge

~ one week later ~
Steve ~
I wake up and change into a yellow shirt and some jeans. I walk downstairs and see Eddie in the kitchen talking with my mom. "Good morning Steven!" My mom smiles at me. "You ready to go?" Eddie asks me. I nod and walk out of the door. We get in and he looks at me. "Are you sure you want to go to school today?" He asks while starting his van. "I'm fine." I say, shutting the car door. He starts to drive to school. "If you ever need to ta-" "talk? Can we please stop talking about my dead dad?" I ask.

"I'm sor-" "JUST STOP. HE'S DEAD THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT SO JUST LEAVE. IT. ALONE." I scream at him. He parks and starts walking into school. "Eddie. Eddie wait!" I yell after him. I hurt him. I didn't mean to. I walk to my first class and sit down. Nancy waves at me. I wave back and see that Eddie's not in his seat. He's skipping. I feel terrible. After the bell rings, I walk into the cafeteria. I sit down next to Eddie before anyone else sits down. "Eddie I'm so sorry. I really didn't mean to yell at you." I say, while looking into his eyes. "It's okay Steve. You can be angry, and mad but, just don't take it out on me okay? I'm just trying to help you." He replies.

"So you're not mad?" I ask. "No, of course i'm not mad. I got called to the office. They were fitting me for my cap and gown." He responds, holding my hand. "Oh I need to go too!" I respond. "No! I mean, they'll do your fitting a different day. They're um, busy." He says nervously. Everyone else from hellfire sits down and looks suspicious. "What did you do?" I ask Eddie. "I did nothing. I'm innocent I swear!" He adds a nervous chuckle to the end of his sentence.

I glare at Dustin. "What did he do Henderson?" Eddie glares at him with a 'You say something I will kill you' look. "Henderson?" I ask. "Nothing. Eddie's innocent." He says and glares back at Eddie with a 'You're welcome' look. The bell rings. "Dammit! I will find out what you're up to Munson!" I yell after him. "I did nothing Harrington! I don't know what you're talking about!" He yells back as he walks away. I walk to my next class and can't stop thinking about what Eddie might have done. Before I even realize, the bell rings. I run outside and someone wraps a blindfold around my eyes.

"Hey! Who is that? Henderson? Robin?" They put me in a car and start driving while someone ties my hands behind my back. "Let me go!" Am I getting kidnapped? "What is happening?!" Finally the car parks and someone grabs me and starts to walk me somewhere. "Hello? Someone answer me!" I yell while kicking my feet. I hear whispering then someone unties my hands. I yank my blindfold off and see Eddie. "YOU DID THIS? I THOUGHT I WAS-" I stop when I see a picnic table with a candle on it and two plates.

"I figured you could use a night out." He said while grabbing my hand and sitting down next to me. "It's also our 6 month anniversary." He said, while handing me a soda. "That's today?!" I exclaim. "Yes it is. That's why I missed first period. I had to set this up." He replied. "Who drove me here?" I asked. "Hellfire did." He responded. "I knew it!" I say.

Eddie ~
"I hope pineapple is okay." I say while opening the pizza box. Steve kisses me on the cheek and shoves a slice in his mouth. "It's so weird. Who knew fruit belongs on pizza?!" He said while chewing. I laugh and grab a slice. "My mom told me the funeral is tomorrow." Steve said while, my smile faded. "We're gonna get through it." I reply while holding his hand. He looked so pretty with the moonlight bouncing off of his hair.

"I love you Harrington." I say while he rests his head on my shoulder. "I love you too Munson." He responds. "You're coming to the funeral right?" He asks me. "Of course." I answer. "Come on." I say while, pulling Steve off of the bench and lay down in the grass. "What are we doing?" He asks while laying down next to me. "When I was little, I used to go outside and trace the stars with my finger." I said while pointing at the stars.

Steve looked up at the little stars and looked back at me. "Why do people call you a freak?" Steve asked, looking back up at the dark sky. "Because, I'm different. I mean, look at me!" I stand up and look down at him. "Because I wear black, and play a 'devil game', I'm a freak." I replied. "You're not a freak to me. I still don't understand why you play d&d but, it doesn't hurt anyone so, I don't care." Steve says, standing up and walking in front of me. "Oh shut up Harrington." I say with a smile. He kisses me then we walk back to where my van is parked. "So you really had them tie me up and cover my eyes so I couldn't see anything?" Steve asked while getting in.

"Yeah. I couldn't have you figuring out the surprise!" I responded while driving to Steve's house. "I thought I was being kidnapped!" Steve exclaimed. "I wouldn't be surprised with that hair you have." I replied. "Hey! I spend time on my hair! It's not my fault your jealous of my beautiful hair." Steve said with a laugh. "Oh trust me, my hair is better." I said, smiling. "Whatever you say, Eddie." I parked and we walked in. "Oh there you two are! Your suits are in the bathroom. Are you okay Steve?" Mrs. Harrington said.

"Mom, I'm fine. Eddie took me on a date. We already told you the suits fit. Are you okay?" Steve replied. Steve's mom walked over to him and pulled him into a hug. She let go and, walked upstairs and shut her bedroom door. "Tomorrow is going to be terrible." Steve said. "I'll be there to help you." I said while hugging him. We walked to his room and laid down. "Thank you Eddie." Steve whispered then kissed me. "You don't have to thank me love." I whisper back while he throws his hand over me. Tomorrow is going to be long.
