Chapter 4

Nestled in the most prosperous part of the Seoul empire, B University was renowned not just for its academic excellence but also for its enchanting campus, adorned with blooming flowers that thrived in its verdant spaces.

In a quaint coffee shop on campus, bathed in the warm glow of the late spring afternoon sun, sat Kim Jae. The sunlight filtered through the glass windows, illuminating his spot by the window, a secluded nook that seemed tailor-made for reflection. Dressed in a simple light blue sweater, he lacked the distinct cinnabar mark typical of gers, but his delicate build left no doubt of his identity.

Kim Jae's features were softly rounded, his fair skin a contrast to the deep brown wood of the table where his hands rested. His eyes, large and luminous beneath a sweep of shoulder-length black hair, added to the gentle aura he exuded. Among the many beautiful faces that frequented the coffee shop, his stood out for its serene simplicity.

Despite the societal limitations faced by gers and females, who were barred from business, military service, or inheriting family enterprises, Kim Jae carried an air of quiet resilience. As he awaited his milk tea and the arrival of his friend An Na-ri, his gaze drifted, lost in thought between reality and reverie, grappling with a blend of fear and contentment.

"He's really cute," murmured a waitress, nudging her coworker as she nodded toward Kim Jae. Her voice carried a mix of admiration and intrigue, drawing the attention of the young man beside her—a classmate of Kim Jae's.

The classmate glanced over, his expression souring as he recognized the familiar face. "He may look cute on the outside," he sneered, "but inside, he's full of nonsense—practically the epitome of naivety and mischief. Ashley, better get his order to him quickly. I want no part in his drama today."

Ashley, picking up on her coworker's reluctance, nodded and quickly prepared to serve Kim Jae, her curiosity piqued by the contrasting opinions about the seemingly innocuous ger sitting quietly by the window.

Ashley approached with a tray bearing Kim Jae's vanilla milk tea and bubble tea. Her presence snapped him from his reverie, and he looked up, meeting her gaze with a clear, direct look.

"Umm..." she started, but then trailed off, momentarily lost in the warmth of his gaze.

"Thank you," Kim Jae murmured, his voice soft yet clear, pulling her back to the moment. Despite noticing her flushed cheeks, he maintained a composed demeanor. She nodded, about to retreat when he gently called her back.

"Sorry to bother you, but could I please have some pineapple cake with this?" His request, delivered with such genuine politeness, resonated sweetly in her ears.

"Yes, I'll get that for you right away," Ashley replied, her voice brightening as she hurried off. She couldn't help but feel a surge of affection for the soft-spoken ger; his gentle nature reminded her of the fluffy, cute creatures she adored.

As Ashley disappeared to fetch the cake, Kim Jae's phone vibrated beside his hands on the table. Picking it up, he saw it was An Na-ri calling.

"Hello?" he answered, his tone neutral yet welcoming.

"Ae, where are you waiting for me?" An Na-ri's voice burst through the speaker, filled with an infectious enthusiasm. He sounded as if he were already standing right outside. "I'm parked in front of the Pickled Plum Cafe. I just realized I never asked which cafe you were at!"

Kim Jae chuckled lightly at his friend's oversight. "I remember telling you to come to the Pickled Plum Cafe," he teased, playing along with An Na-ri's forgetfulness.
