Chapter 54.

The story unfolded in layers, each revealing a clearer picture of Shin Young's past. He was once a delivery man juggling various part-time jobs, working tirelessly to repay his late parents' loan. His dream was simple: clear the debt, save enough money and open a café in Seoul. Marriage seemed like a distant possibility, especially with the societal stigma attached to gers with low fertility.

One fateful day, after finally settling his parents' debt, Shin Young boarded a train back to his village in Boseong. As he approached the village entrance, he noticed a group of strange men, their eyes scrutinizing everyone who had entered or left, meticulously checking their belongings. Puzzled, Shin Young approached an older woman standing nearby, seeking answers.

Her cinnabar-marked forehead furrowing with worry, the woman quickly pulled Shin Young away from the men's watchful eyes. "Early this morning," she whispered urgently, "these men came to the village head, claiming a male child stole from them and fled into our village. They said the child is about three or four years old. "Early this morning," she whispered urgently, "these men came to the village head and claimed that a male child had stolen from them and fled into our village. If we don't find the child, they are threatening to burn down the village head's house."

"Is the child a ger or a normal boy?" Shin Young asked, understanding the gravity of the situation. The distinction was crucial; if the child was a ger, it likely meant the men were traffickers rather than victims of petty theft.

The woman glanced around nervously before whispering, "It's a ger, with a cinnabar mark on his cheek."

Shin Young's heart sank. The mark confirmed the worst: these men were traffickers. The high prices paid by unscrupulous individuals for virgin gers, child gers, and fertile gers were well known, making it clear that the ger had escaped a fate worse than death.

Shin Young thanked the woman and made his way to his parent's house, a place he hadn't visited since he started working to pay off their debts after their untimely deaths. The house was dusty, a silent testament to years of neglect. He coughed as he opened all the windows, letting in fresh air and light. Despite his immediate surroundings, his mind kept drifting back to the ger child. He hoped the child was safe.

While lost in thought, he became aware of a noise coming from the kitchen—a clatter, as if something had fallen. Fear gripped him, and he quickly grabbed the nearest object for protection, which happened to be a worn-out shoe. He moved slowly, cautiously, towards the kitchen.

As he pushed the door open, he came face to face with a dirty-faced child, whose eyes were wide with fear and innocence. It was the ger those men were looking for. The child's round eyes were filled with terror, and his body bore the marks of bruises and torn clothing, barely providing any protection.

Reacting swiftly, Shin Young locked all the windows and doors, ensuring no one could enter. He knelt to the child's level, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. The child didn't make a sound, but the fear was evident in his trembling body.

"What's your name?" Shin Young asked gently, but the child only tried to inch away, mistrust and fear in every movement.

"It's okay, you're safe here," Shin Young reassured, reaching out slowly. "I won't let anyone hurt you."

Seeing how scared the child was, Shin Young spoke gently, promising that he would protect him. They sat together in the empty kitchen, the silence only broken by the occasional sniffle from the child. As night fell, the village buzzed with activity. Peering out of the window, Shin Young saw the villagers, led by the village head, carrying torches and thick sticks as they made their way to the entrance of the village.
