Chapter 68.

Ji Hu sat on the edge of the hospital bed, his heart racing as he held the trembling form of Jae Soo in his arms. The sterile white walls of the room felt oppressive, closing in on him with every passing second. Jae Soo, cocooned in a soft blanket, shivered uncontrollably. His face was pale, and his eyes, usually so vibrant, now looked distant and unfocused. Ji Hu gently rubbed Jae Soo's back in slow, soothing circles, trying to provide some comfort, though he felt utterly helpless.

Dr. San, an older man with greying hair and kind eyes, stood at the foot of the bed, holding a clipboard. He had a weary expression as if the weight of the news he was about to deliver bore heavily on him. Removing his glasses, he pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed, clearly gathering his thoughts. The dim fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows on his face, accentuating the deep lines etched from years of experience.

"Doctor, what do I do?" Ji Hu's voice cracked with worry, his grip tightening slightly around Jae Soo. The weight of the situation was pressing down on him, and he looked to the doctor for any glimmer of hope or guidance.

Dr. San took a deep breath and met Ji Hu's anxious gaze. "Mr. Baek, we've conducted a series of tests," he began, his voice steady but tinged with sadness. "During these tests, we found traces of a psychosis-inducing drug in Jae Soo's blood. It appears that he had been subjected to this substance for a prolonged period before his pregnancy." He paused, allowing the information to sink in. The implications were grim, and he wanted to be as clear and gentle as possible.

Ji Hu's heart sank further. He had suspected something was wrong, but this... this was beyond anything he had imagined. He continued to hold Jae Soo, who was now curling into himself, seeking warmth and comfort. Ji Hu felt the subtle jerks of Jae Soo's body as he struggled with the chills and confusion gripping him.

Dr. San continued, "Given the prolonged exposure to this drug, Jae Soo is now experiencing withdrawal symptoms. The absence of the drug in his system has led to severe psychological and physical reactions. These include memory lapses, episodes of confusion where he mixes up memories, and self-harming behaviours, such as pulling his hair or scratching himself." The doctor's eyes softened as he noticed the new scratches on Jae Soo's forearms, faint but unmistakable evidence of his distress.

Ji Hu's eyes stung with unshed tears. He had seen the signs—Jae Soo's sudden bouts of anxiety, the way he sometimes seemed to drift away even when they were together. He remembered the nights when Jae Soo would wake up screaming, clutching his head, as if trying to hold on to reality. Ji Hu had always been there, calming him down, but he hadn't known the full extent of the damage.

"Is there... is there anything we can do to help him?" Ji Hu asked, his voice barely above a whisper. The thought of losing Jae Soo to the darkness that plagued him was unbearable.

Dr. San nodded, though his expression remained sombre. "We can manage the symptoms and provide treatment to help stabilize him. Therapy will be crucial in helping him cope with the psychological effects. It's a long road, but with the right support, he can manage this condition." He placed a reassuring hand on Ji Hu's shoulder. "It's important that he feels safe and supported and continues to receive professional care."

Ji Hu nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. He looked down at Jae Soo, whose breathing had started to even out, though he clung to Ji Hu's arm as if it were a lifeline. Ji Hu knew that no matter what, he would stand by Jae Soo's side. He would protect him from the demons of the past and the shadows of their present.

As Dr. San excused himself, Ji Hu leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss on Jae Soo's forehead. "I'm here, Jae Soo," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm not going anywhere. We'll get through this together."
