Chapter 15

Kim Ae-Cha's Story Continues (Kim Jae-Soo's Mother)

Two months after the birth of Kim Jae-Soo, during a family gathering, Ae-Cha's world came crashing down once more. The annual gatherings of both families were usually held three to four times a year—one during the New Year, another for the family heads' birthdays, and the last for the Christmas dinner.

On this particular day, they were celebrating her husband's grandmother's 80th birthday. As the festivities progressed and guests began to leave, it was time for the family to have a private dinner. Just then, Jae-Soo's ear turned red, and he tightly clenched his tiny hand into a fist, crying uncontrollably in her arms. Ignoring the judgmental stares from those around her, Ae-Cha confidently walked away from the commotion and into the sanctuary of the family mansion.

Searching for a quiet spot to breastfeed her baby, she made her way to her husband's childhood room. The moment she stepped inside, she noticed everything was impeccably tidy. She gently settled down on the plush couch in the spacious room.

"Aigoo, my cute baby wants food," she cooed at him, watching him pout, ready to cry. Quickly, she began to breastfeed him, rubbing his chubby cheeks softly.

After dozing off for nearly half an hour, she gently laid him on the cozy bed and proceeded to the restroom. Her attention was immediately drawn to a framed photograph displaying a man, a woman, and a two-year-old girl. Holding the photograph, she trembled, realizing her husband was holding her sister and a baby girl whom Lee Ari had claimed was her ex-boyfriend's child.

Ae-Cha didn't want to jump to conclusions, but as she looked around, she noticed more incriminating evidence. Taking deep breaths, she continued to the restroom. Afterward, she picked up the sleeping Jae-Soo and left the room calmly, her mind swirling with thoughts and suspicions.

Everything around Ae-Cha buzzed with activity, voices blending into a lively hum. Yet, she felt suspended in slow motion, as if time had abandoned her. The fog that had clouded her mind suddenly cleared, and her eyes sharpened, focusing on the intimate proximity between her husband and sister. Their heads leaned close together, their laughter mingling effortlessly with the chatter around them.

Ae-Cha's heart sank. She felt like an intruder, an unwelcome guest at her own family gathering. Her footsteps were heavy as she slipped out of the garden, each step a silent plea for someone to notice her departure. No one did.

The sight of their closeness was a dagger twisting in her chest, each laugh and shared glance a reminder of her betrayal. Ae-Cha's heart felt like it was breaking into pieces, but she knew she couldn't let it shatter completely. She had to protect herself and her two-month-old son, Jae-Soo, from the poison that had infiltrated her life.

Determination set in her jaw, Ae-Cha packed the few precious items she could carry. She gathered Jae-Soo in her arms, his soft breath against her neck giving her the courage to move forward. The weight of her sorrow pressed down on her, but she clung to the hope of a fresh start.

As the Train rumbled towards Busan, Ae-Cha glanced at Jae-Soo's sleeping face. His innocence was a beacon of strength for her. She whispered, "We'll build a new life, my precious one. Full of love and happiness." Her words were more than a promise; they were a vow, sealed by the resilience she felt growing within her.

As Ae-Cha arrived in Busan with her two-month-old son, Jae-Soo, the weight of their uncertain future pressed heavily upon her shoulders. The bustling streets seemed to close in on her, yet her spirit remained unbroken despite the daunting circumstances. She wandered aimlessly, clutching Jae-Soo tightly to her chest, determined to find a way to survive.
