Chapter 59.

Ji Hu was finally allowed to leave the hospital after a day and a half, still under strict instructions to avoid any strenuous activity. Fortunately, he had already completed his final exams, so he now had time to think things through and devise a plan.

Upon arriving home, Ji Hu learned from his butler that his grandmother had once again disappeared on one of her usual excursions, dressed plainly and mingling with the common folk. Settling into his study, Ji Hu stared at the pen and journal in front of him, his mind racing. He needed to piece together all the information he remembered to prevent the tragedies of the past from repeating.

As he began writing, fragments of his past life started to form a clearer picture.

In their first life, Jae-soo had died on their wedding day. Ae Cha, his mother, had been alive and well, and his older brother, In Soo, wasn't mute. In fact, In Soo was a ger who had married into the An family, specifically to Na-ri's oldest brother. Choi Min Jun had never cheated on Ae Cha. Instead, it was Ae Cha's sister who had married her boyfriend, who eventually gambled away much of the Lee family's wealth. Ae Cha's younger brother had also died from a drug overdose, so there had never been a 'Su Jin' as a Choi child.

The person who had killed Jae-soo was his aunt, who had intended to stab Ae Cha. In that life, Kim Jae-soo and Ji Hu had been childhood sweethearts, growing up together and loving each other deeply. Kim Jae-soo had been known as Choi Jae-soo.

Ji Hu recalled standing on the riverbank with the urn containing Jae-soo's ashes. He had whispered apologies for failing to protect him and lamented that there was no one to fight against for hurting his lover because Lee Ari had gone mad seeing her plan fail. Consumed by regret and pain, Ji Hu had taken his own life at the age of 25, a year after Jae-soo's death.

Thinking this long, Ji Hu's head started to hurt. From his memory, he realized something significant: this was his third life. This was a staggering revelation. If this was his third life, then why was the second life so drastically different from the first? Ignoring his aching head, he delved deeper into his thoughts.

In their first life, everything had been relatively peaceful. He and Kim Jae-soo had grown up together, fallen in love, and planned a future together, despite the tragic events that unfolded. The second life, however, had been filled with chaos and tragedy from the start.

'If our first life was peaceful and the second life became chaotic, was it because I was reborn?' he wondered. In the second life, his rebirth had occurred after he and Kim Jae-soo had been married for a year and had Mi-reu as their child.

The thought made his head spin further. Why was the second life so chaotic compared to the first? Was his rebirth the cause of all the turmoil? Or were there other forces at play that he couldn't see yet?

He recalled the moments leading up to his rebirth in the second life. The pain of losing Jae-soo, the grief that consumed him, and the determination to avenge his lover. Those feelings had driven him to take his own life, and somehow, he had been given another chance.

But why? And by whom?

The questions buzzed in his mind. Was there a greater purpose to these lives? Was he meant to protect Jae-soo from some unseen force? He remembered the woman's voice in his dream asking him if he could protect Jae-soo. That voice hadn't been familiar, yet it felt significant.

Ji Hu rubbed his temples, trying to alleviate the headache. He had to get to the bottom of this. He needed to understand why his life was unfolding the way they were and what he could do to protect Jae-soo in this life.

A bold idea popped up in Ji Hu's mind: since his rebirth in their second life was late, could it mean that someone else had also been reborn much earlier and had started changing things?

The thought sent a shiver down his spine. If someone had indeed been reborn before him and had altered the course of events, it would explain the chaotic differences between his first and second lives. It could mean that someone was actively working against him, shaping the world in a way that led to pain and suffering for him and Jae-soo.

Finally deciding to rest, Ji Hu closed his journal and went to bed. It was already past dinner, and he had eaten earlier, but the mental exhaustion was taking its toll. He needed to recharge, to think clearly and come up with a plan.

As he lay in bed, the darkness of the room enveloped him, and the weight of his thoughts pressed down on him. Who could it be? Who would want to disrupt their lives so thoroughly? And why? These questions would have to wait for another day. For now, he let the comfort of his bed and the silence of the night lull him into a much-needed sleep.

Meanwhile, Min Jun used a different, brand-new number to call Ae Cha. She picked up after two rings.

"Hello?" she asked, her voice soft and sweet, sending shivers down his spine. It was past ten p.m., and he could tell his call had woken her up.

"If you don't speak, I will hang up," she said, her tone firm despite the sleepiness.

Min Jun quickly spoke up. "Ae Cha," he called her name sweetly, hearing her gasp and the rustling of sheets as she sat up.

"What do you want?" Her voice turned cold, realizing who was on the other end.

"Can we just go back to how we were?" he pleaded, but she cut him off sharply.

"You and I have nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with each other."

"Ae Cha, don't say that. We are still, in fact, husband and wife," he said, trying to coax her.

She laughed, an elegant but bitter sound. "Oh, need I remind you? We are no longer that, and just thinking about it makes me throw up a little in my mouth."

"Ae Cha, don't be willful. Listen to me. I never signed the divorce papers nor did I fill them out, so I am still your husband and—"

Her laughter cut through his words. "Oh, Min Jun, it seems that being with my sister for years has made you foolish, with water in place of a brain. Well, need I remind you, with or without your permission, our marriage has been annulled. For more than two decades, we have never been close, both intimately and otherwise. That means automatic annulment, and our separation is on the grounds of your infidelity."

Min Jun's eyes widened in disbelief, but before he could respond, she continued. "So, please, Mr. Choi, we have nothing to do with each other. Have a bad night."

She hung up. He stared at the black screen of his phone, still processing her words. Anger built up inside him until he smashed the phone to the ground in a fit of rage. "Damn it," he muttered, the reality of his situation sinking in.

He was going to contest it, and in that way, he could get her back to him.
