Chapter 55.

Baek Ji-Hu bolted from his car, his heart pounding louder than the blaring sirens and the chaotic noise of the ambulance. A small crowd had gathered around the villa, their faces masks of shock and curiosity. He pushed through them, his thoughts a jumbled mess of fear and regret. If only he hadn't left for the office because of that so-called emergency, none of this would have happened.

As he neared the villa, flames licking the night sky, police officers intercepted him, trying to hold him back.

"Sir, you need to stay back," one of them said, his voice firm but not unkind.

Ji-Hu struggled against their grip, his desperation lending him strength. "My family is in there! My wife and son!"

Two officers tried to restrain him, their efforts barely managing to keep him from charging into the burning building. Ji-Hu's eyes scanned the scene frantically, and then he saw it—a firefighter emerging from the smoke, cradling Mi-reu.

"Mi-reu!" Ji-Hu screamed, relief and fear crashing over him. But as he searched the firefighter's arms, there was no sign of Kim Jae-Soo. His heart skipped a beat, a cold dread settling in his stomach.

"Where's Jae-Soo? Where's my wife?" he demanded, his voice cracking with anguish.

An explosion rocked the night, sending a shockwave that knocked everyone to the ground. For Ji-Hu, it felt as though time had slowed to a crawl. He heard Mi-reu's terrified cry in the background as he fell to his knees, his eyes fixed on the house, that was now reduced to shreds. Tears streamed down his face, his heart shattering with each sob.

"It's my fault," Ji-Hu whispered, the realization crashing down on him. "I couldn't protect him again." His mind replayed the earlier conversation with Kim Jae-Soo. He had told him to sleep, assuring him that he would handle the video monitoring because he believed Jae soo would never hurt their child.

He should have stayed. If he had, maybe—just maybe—Jae-Soo wouldn't have perished in the fire.

As the fire was finally extinguished, Ji-Hu, who was still kneeling on the ground with his spirit broken, was approached by one of the firefighters who placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. The firefighter placed a comforting hand on Ji-Hu's shoulder. Placing a comforting hand on Ji-Hu's shoulder, the firefighter gently informed him, filled with sympathy, "Your wife, Jae-Soo... he was trapped under a fallen chandelier while saving your son."

Another firefighter stepped forward, holding a small glass jar. "We believe these are the remains of your wife," he said, handing the jar to Ji-Hu.

Ji-Hu's hands trembled as he took the jar, the reality of the situation sinking in. His beloved Jae-Soo was gone, and all that remained were ashes in a jar. His chest tightened with grief, and a heart-wrenching cry escaped his lips. "Jae-Soo!Clutching the jar to his chest, he wailed, as if trying to hold onto what little was left of his love.

Mi-reu, now cradled in a blanket, was brought over by another firefighter. The child's cries had softened to whimpers, his small body trembling with fear and confusion. Ji-Hu reached out, pulling Mi-reu into his arms, holding him close as they both cried.

"I'm so sorry, Mi-reu," Ji-Hu choked out, his tears mingling with his son's. "I'm so sorry."

Ji-Hu woke up startled, his heart pounding in his chest, his cheeks wet with tears. Disoriented, he struggled to understand what was happening. The dream had felt so real, so vivid. Every detail, every emotion, lingered with him, making it hard to breathe.

"Kim Jae-Soo..." he whispered, the name escaping his lips as if it held the key to the pain in his chest. Why had he been screaming Jae-Soo's name in his sleep?

He sat up, clutching his chest as if to steady the storm of emotions swirling inside him. Tears continued to pour from his eyes, unabated, as he tried to grasp the meaning of the dream. It was as if he had lost a piece of himself, an irreplaceable piece.

The dream played over and over in his mind: the explosion, the fire, the helplessness he felt as he watched everything crumble around him. The jar of ashes—it all felt too real to be just a dream.

"What does this mean?" he asked himself, his voice barely a whisper in the stillness of the room.

Ji-Hu wiped his tears with the back of his hand, trying to regain his composure. But the sense of loss, the overwhelming grief, remained. He needed to understand why his subconscious had conjured such a harrowing vision, and why Jae-Soo's name had been on his lips. Taking a deep breath, Ji-Hu resolved to figure out the meaning behind the dream. Whether it was a premonition, a manifestation of his deepest fears, or a sign that he needed to find Jae-Soo, he couldn't ignore it.

Lee Ari, seething with anger and frustration, decided to pay a visit to her parents. She needed their support and validation, especially after the public humiliation she had endured at the Sage launch. As she drove to the Lee family estate, her mind raced with thoughts of how Ae Cha had outshined her and the disdain she had seen in Min Jun's eyes.

Arriving at the sprawling estate, the familiar sight of perfectly manicured lawns and the grand entrance that always gave her a sense of superiority greeted her. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, were in their sixties, but they still carried themselves with an air of affluence and authority. They had always enabled her behavior, never once chastising her for her misdeeds, and today, she needed that unwavering support.

She found them in the living room, her mother reading a magazine while her father watched the news. At the sight of their daughter, they both looked up with welcoming smiles.

"Ah, Ari, my dear. What brings you here?" her mother asked, setting aside her magazine.

Lee Ari wasted no time. "It's Ae Cha, Mother. She's trying to steal Min Jun from me," she said, her voice shaking with a mix of anger and desperation.

Mr. Lee frowned, turning off the television. "What are you talking about, Ari? Calm down and explain."

Taking a deep breath, Lee Ari launched into a tirade about the events at the Sage launch. "Ae Cha is back. She's trying to ruin everything. I can't let her take Min Jun away from me."

Mrs. Lee's expression darkened. "That wretched girl? She's back yet didn't come to see her parents."

Mr. Lee nodded in agreement. "We've always known she was unfilial and a white-eyed wolf. We need to find a way to put her in her place."

Lee Ari felt a sense of relief wash over her. Her parents' support was exactly what she needed to bolster her resolve. "But what can we do? She's already stepping on my head."

Mrs. Lee's eyes gleamed with a cunning light. "We need to find a way to discredit her, something that will make her too ashamed to show her face."

Mr. Lee leaned forward, a calculating look on his face. "Oh, don't worry, creating a skeleton is possible, so there's no need to worry too much."
