Chapter 57.

Kim Jae-soo had two more exams to write, and he and Na-ri were walking together out of their faculty. They noticed they were being followed. This scared the two of them, as the usually busy faculty was empty due to some students still writing exams while others had gone home after finishing. Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri were still catching their breath, hearts pounding, as they tried to comprehend the situation. The usually bustling faculty area now seemed eerily deserted, and their fear had turned into palpable dread. They had almost reached the front of the faculty building when they heard the horn of a very familiar car. Relief washed over them at the sight of Ji-Hu and Man Sung-ho, but that relief was short-lived as they noticed the two men who had been chasing them emerging from the shadows.

Man Sung-ho and Ji-Hu quickly got out of the car. As they realized the danger the gers were in, Man Sung-ho and Ji-Hu quickly got out of the car, replacing the initial confusion on their faces with determination. Without hesitation, they confronted the two gangsters. A tense fight ensued, with Ji-Hu and Man Sung-ho managing to fend off the attackers. However, the situation escalated when two more gangsters appeared from behind the building, rushing towards Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri, who were too weak and exhausted to move.

The new gangsters approached menacingly, and Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri, feeling utterly defenseless, huddled together on the ground. The sight of the bat being swung at them made their hearts stop. In a split second, Ji-Hu leaped forward, using his own body to shield them. The bat struck Ji-Hu's head with a sickening thud, causing him to stagger but not fall. Man Sung-ho, seeing his friend in danger, quickly picked up the bat from the ground where it had fallen after one of the attackers had been incapacitated. With a powerful swing, he struck the remaining gangster, knocking him out.

Ji-Hu, though injured, stayed close to Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri, ensuring they were safe. Blood trickled down his face, but his focus remained on protecting them. Man Sung-ho, breathing heavily from the exertion and adrenaline, checked the unconscious attackers to ensure they posed no further threat.

Ji Hu, swaying slightly from the impact of the bat, looked down at Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri. "Are you two okay?" he asked, his voice weak but filled with concern.

Kim Jae-soo, tears streaming down his face, nodded. "Ji..., Ji Hu..."

Man Sung-ho dropped the bat and rushed to Ji Hu's side, supporting him. "Hang in there, Ji Hu. Help is on the way."

Their bodyguards arrived, quickly assessing the situation and securing the area. An ambulance followed shortly, and paramedics began tending to Ji Hu's head wound and checking on Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri for any injuries.

As Ji Hu was loaded into the ambulance, Kim Jae-soo tightly held his hand. "Ji Hu..," he whispered, his voice filled with gratitude and fear.

Ji Hu managed a faint smile. "I'll always protect you," he replied before losing consciousness.

Ji Hu felt like he was stuck in limbo as different images flashed before him, some happy, some sad. It was a whirlwind of emotions, and he struggled to make sense of them. One moment he was in the middle of a joyous celebration, the next in the depths of despair.

He soon saw himself watching Kim Jae-soo, looking radiant in his wedding attire, suddenly stabbed on their wedding day. The joyous atmosphere turned into chaos. Their families screamed in horror, and Ji Hu felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness wash over him.

Amidst the turmoil, he spotted a woman who looked haggard and unhinged, laughing hysterically as she was dragged away by security. Her laughter echoed in Ji Hu's ears, adding to the surreal nightmare that was unfolding before him.

"No!" Ji Hu screamed, reaching out towards Kim Jae-soo, but his body felt heavy, immobile, as if he were stuck in quicksand. He watched in agony as Kim Jae-soo collapsed, blood staining his pristine clothes.

"Jae-soo!" Ji Hu's voice cracked with desperation, his eyes filling with tears. He tried to move, to fight against whatever force was holding him back, but it was futile.

In the haze of his mind, the images shifted again. He saw a series of moments with Kim Jae-soo—quiet mornings with shared cups of coffee, stolen kisses in the kitchen, the way Jae-soo's eyes sparkled when he laughed, and the comforting warmth of his embrace.

Then, just as abruptly, the images turned dark once more. Ji Hu found himself in a dimly lit room, holding an urn close to his chest. The weight of it was both a comfort and a torment. Kim Jae-soo's ashes rested inside, the remnants of the love of his life reduced to mere fragments. He lay weakly in bed, his body frail and worn. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic, a reminder of the hospital where he now spent his days.

Beside him stood Mi-reu, now a grown man of twenty-seven, gripping his father's hand tightly. The sorrow etched into Mi-reu's face was a mirror of Ji Hu's own heartbreak. "Dad, please hold on," Mi-reu's voice trembled, tears streaming down his face.

Ji Hu mustered a faint smile, his strength waning. "My wish... is for our ashes... to be together," he whispered, each word a struggle. "Bury us... together."

Mi-reu nodded, his tears falling freely. "I promise, Dad. I promise."

As Ji Hu took his last breath, a sense of peace washed over him. He had dedicated his life to raising Mi-reu after losing Kim Jae-soo, pouring all his love and energy into their son. He remembered the rage and relentless drive that fueled him as he sought vengeance against the Choi family and his treacherous second uncle. Ji Hu had burned down everything related to them, leaving nothing but ashes and ruins in his wake. The memories of his revenge were vivid, a testament to the depth of his pain and loss.

When his revenge was complete, he found it hard to continue living. Yet, for Mi-reu's sake, he pushed forward, guiding him through life until his son turned twenty-seven. Then, as if his body had been holding on for that purpose alone, Ji Hu's health rapidly deteriorated. Even in his weakened state, he clung to Kim Jae-soo's urn, finding solace in the closeness to his beloved. He died with a smile on his face, holding the urn in his arms, and feeling content in the knowledge that he would soon be reunited with his love.

As the vision faded, Ji Hu heard his own voice echo in his mind, "I will protect you in our next life."

Ji Hu still couldn't open his eyes; they remained tightly shut, as if glued by the weight of his dreams. Before him were images of himself and his family of three happily playing in the garden. Mi-reu, looking to be about five years old, giggled and chased butterflies, his laughter filling the air. Kim Jae-soo, healthier and free from the struggles that once plagued him, smiled warmly, his eyes bright with joy. The scene filled Ji Hu with a deep sense of relief.

But then, everything paused. The laughter, the movement, the warmth—everything stopped abruptly. Ji Hu's heart raced as he tried to understand what was happening.

"Are you sure you can protect him?" A woman's voice asked, her tone gentle yet filled with an otherworldly resonance.

Ji Hu didn't care who had asked the question. His resolve was unshakable. "Yes, I can and will protect him," he replied firmly, his voice echoing in the silence.

A soft laughter followed, ethereal and comforting. "Very well," the voice said, fading into the distance.

Suddenly, the scene before him dissolved into bright, blinding light. Ji Hu felt himself being pulled back into consciousness. His eyelids fluttered open, revealing the stark white ceiling of a hospital room. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled his nostrils, and he became acutely aware of the beeping of medical machines around him.

Disoriented, Ji Hu turned his head slowly.
