Chapter 8

KIM JAE-SOO

It was 5 o'clock in the afternoon when Kim Jae-soo finally made it home. The house was quiet and empty; it seemed An Na-ri was still out, likely enjoying the company of their new acquaintances. Knowing how much An Na-ri valued expanding his social circle, Jae-soo decided to prepare a snack for himself, just in case his friend returned home later than expected.

After eating, he sat down in front of the TV, his mind wandering. He stared blankly at the screen, lost in thought. It was still hard for him to grasp that this was his life now. Even as he lay dying in his previous life, he never imagined he would get another chance to show his mother how much he cared for her.

But a miracle had happened, granting him the rarest of gifts: a second chance. Determined to make the most of it, Jae-soo resolved to bring pride and joy to his mother, ensuring she received the care and love she deserved.

The evening passed quickly, and before he knew it, the digital clock on the TV screen showed that it was nine o'clock. The sound of the front door opening jolted him out of his reverie. Moments later, he heard a familiar voice, punctuated by drunken chuckles. "The room is moving," An Na-ri giggled, followed by more laughter.

Jae-soo stood up and walked towards the door, finding his best friend struggling to stay upright, his face flushed from alcohol. Sighing, Jae-soo moved to support him, guiding the rambling ger towards his bedroom.

"With all this sighing, I'll probably be soulless soon," Jae-soo thought wryly as he helped Na-ri to his room.

"Thank goodness I had something to eat," he muttered to himself, thankful he had taken the time to prepare a snack earlier.

After helping Na-ri wash his face and settle into bed, Kim Jae-soo felt the weight of the day's emotional stress catching up with him. He too needed rest. With a final glance at his peacefully sleeping friend, he made his way to his own bedroom, grateful for the quiet and ready to embrace the sleep he desperately needed.

PAST

I wiped the sweat from my brow, feeling a sense of accomplishment as I surveyed my handiwork. I had worked diligently to prepare a special lunch for my husband. He rarely brought lunch to his office, and I worried he wouldn't enjoy the cafeteria food. At the same time, I was anxious that I wouldn't be able to replicate my mother's recipes to a satisfactory standard, fearing he might not even like what I made.

The maids had watched me with puzzled expressions as I bustled around the kitchen, but I was proud of what I had created. I had even made a miniature pudding for dessert, a small touch that filled me with satisfaction. Once everything was packed neatly into the lunch box, I realized I needed to make sure I looked presentable and concealed my small baby bump.

Before long, I was standing in front of the enormous corporate headquarters, certain this was where my husband would be. I didn't know much about his exact location, as he often moved between different branches and smaller ventures they owned. Each day, he would come home after I had fallen asleep and leave before I woke up. We hardly exchanged words, but I cherished simply being in the same house as him.

Grinning, I looked up from the bottom to the top of the skyscraper, the prominent BH emblem gleaming at the top. It felt like a small victory to be here, holding a piece of my heart in the form of a lovingly prepared meal.

Taking a deep breath, I walked through the grand entrance, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

Relief washed over me as I anticipated seeing him soon. The loneliness had been gnawing at me, taking a toll on my mental health, almost pulling me back into my darker thoughts.
