Chapter 40

Classes for the day were done, and it was an hour before Kim Jae-soo resumed his part-time job at the cafe. The past few days had left him feeling so emotionally drained that the thought of Baek Ji-Hu hadn't even crossed his mind.

"I just want to eat," An Na-ri said, rubbing his flat tummy as if imagining a feast. Kim Jae-soo rolled his eyes, shaking his head at this foodie whose love for food was overflowing. As they walked out of the faculty building, Sora and Hikaru ran over, calling out to them. Jae-soo had almost forgotten about these friends. Na-ri, the ever social butterfly, immediately stopped, jumping up and flapping his hands around like he was waving them over.

"Hi, Ri-ri and Jae-soo," Sora greeted with a wide grin as Hikaru, the ever-quiet ger, gave Kim Jae-soo a nod and waved at Na-ri.

"We wanted to know if you guys wanted to hang out Maybe get something to eat?" Sora spoke up again.

"Yes, we are," Na-ri replied with a smile.

"I have work, so I might not be free enough to eat with you guys," Kim Jae-soo said, starting to walk away. Na-ri pulled him back.

"Of course, I know that, but have you forgotten we can eat at your job?" Na-ri said, flashing a mischievous grin.

Kim Jae-soo sighed but couldn't help but smile at Na-ri's enthusiasm. "Alright, alright. Let's go then," he conceded, knowing that spending time with his friends would lift his spirits, even if he had to work.

The group made their way to the cafe, the lively chatter between Sora and Na-ri filling the air while Hikaru and Jae-soo walked more quietly beside them. When they arrived at the cafe, the familiar bell above the door chimed as they entered, and Kim Jae-soo felt a sense of comfort wash over him.

"Welcome!" Shin Young greeted from behind the counter, his face lighting up when he saw Kim Jae-soo and his friends. "You brought a crowd today, Jae-soo."

"Yeah, just some friends wanting to hang out," Jae-soo replied with a small smile.

"Great! Grab a table, and I'll bring you guys the special," Shin Young said, winking at Jae-soo.

They settled into a cozy corner of the cafe, the soft hum of conversations and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. As they chatted and laughed, Kim Jae-soo felt the tension of the past days slowly melt away. He still had work to do, but for now, he was surrounded by friends and a sense of belonging that made everything feel a little bit better.

It was almost time to meet his mom when the bell above the cafe door chimed, signaling a new arrival. Turning towards the entrance, he froze as he saw an elegantly dressed woman stepping inside. She wore sunglasses that shielded her eyes from the bright sun outside. Pausing for a moment, she removed the glasses and looked around the cozy cafe.

Kim Jae-soo had just left the kitchen when he saw her. His heart skipped a beat. His mother looked beautiful, a stark contrast to the modest appearance he had often resented in his past life. Her attire consisted of a knee-length, long-sleeved dress in a soft, neutral beige tone. She wore a dress with a V-neckline and cinched it at the waist with a wide black belt featuring a large circular buckle, accentuating her waistline and adding a stylish contrast to the outfit.

Her shoes were black, closed-toe heels with a slight decorative detail on the front, complementing the belt and completing her polished appearance. Her hair was styled neatly, pulled back in a low, loose bun that added to her refined and graceful aesthetic. She looked every bit like a sophisticated woman, drawing the eyes of the cafe's patrons as she entered.
