Chapter 32.

DREAM.

"Dammy, dammy," a soft, sobbing call pierced the dimly lit room. The beautiful ger, Kim Jae-soo, looked around in shock. The light's reflection revealed the image of a boy lying on the bed with his favorite dragon pillow, which his ger father had made for him.

"Dammy, the old uncle bodyguard said that you left me," the child's voice trembled, squeezing the pillow tighter, tears streaming down his face and staining the pillow. The quiet figure in the corner finally moved. Kim Jae-soo felt distressed seeing his baby cry. Who could be heartless enough to say that to a child?

"Dammy, is it true you will hear me when I hug the dragon tightly and call to you?" The boy's voice was muffled as he buried his head in the pillow.

'I can hear you, baby,' Kim Jae-soo thought as he walked to lay beside the crying child. He knew this was probably a dream, but it felt too real. His child's cheeks were no longer as chubby, his eyes were swollen with tear stains, and his mouth trembled as he spoke again.

"Dammy, Appa misses you too. He doesn't talk much, but he always holds on to you," the boy said, unable to understand his father's sorrow but sensing it deeply.

Kim Jae-soo's heart sank. Did this mean that if this were real, Ji-Hu would neglect their child? He raised his hand and tried to pat the crying child, not noticing the tears in his own eyes as he whispered, 'Dammy loves Mi-reu. Mi-reu should stay strong.'

The boy on the bed stopped crying and stared wide-eyed at the empty air. He could feel his dammy's warmth around him. His tears ceased, and tiredness shut his eyes. Kim Jae-soo felt a mix of shock and relief as the child seemed to sense his presence.

Not knowing how long he was there, Kim Jae-soo saw the door to the room finally open. A tired-looking Ji-Hu entered, his face etched with weariness. Kim Jae-soo quickly got to his feet, as if his movements had stirred Mi-reu, who whimpered softly in his sleep.

'Sigh.'

Ji-Hu sighed softly and sat where Kim Jae-soo had been lying, hugging his child. The man caressed his son's head with one hand while holding a beautiful locket with the other. Kim Jae-soo watched, puzzled, as Ji-Hu's fingers traced the locket's intricate details before returning to stroke Mi-reu's soft hair.

Suddenly, Ji-Hu stopped. He kissed his son softly on the head, then gently tucked him in before standing up to leave the room. Kim Jae-soo tried to follow, but found himself unable to move beyond the room. All he could do was watch as the once strong man, now looking so fragile, walked away, his shoulders burdened with an invisible weight.

Kim Jae-soo's heart ached.

Kim Jae-soo woke up with tear stains on his cheeks, the remnants of his haunting dream lingering in his mind. He looked around his familiar room, trying to push the unsettling thoughts to the back of his mind. With a deep breath, he proceeded to take a bath and prepare for his class that morning.

Kim Jae-soo and Na-ri entered their classroom, and the loud chatter of students abruptly halted as eyes turned to them. Na-ri immediately understood why, but Kim Jae-soo remained oblivious, his past experiences making him indifferent to such attention. With his head down, he appeared deep in contemplation and worry.

'Was his child and Ji-Hu okay?' he wondered.

[Are they still pretending to be friends?] Some students whispered among themselves, their eyes filled with curiosity and gossip. Seated close to the window, Na-ri glanced at his friend, noticing that Kim Jae-soo was staring out at the garden, seemingly unbothered by the hushed conversations around them.
