I sat on my bed, looking at the blue prints for the magnet I would be working on. Who knew I would be devoted to making this magnet work. I didn't think it would take over my entire time at night, working and reworking it. My father and I came up with a prototype, but it had since failed to even lift the axe because of how heavy it was. Which meant another trip to the junk yard to get a stronger magnet. Maybe an even bigger one at that. I sighed and fell back onto the cushions, trying to sleep. But with the constant ideas flowing inside my head, I needed to enact on it. I got up and grabbed my bag. Walking out of my room, I headed out to the back and grabbed the knife we had finished. I tucked it inside my bag and started to make my way to the junk yard.
When I reached it, I headed in and started to look for any magnets and anything magnetic for this to work. I tested the magnet on the knife, which was suitable for the knife, but was it suitable for both the axe and gun? That was another thing we needed to test. I grabbed all the magnets I could and headed out of the junk yard, heading back home. Ever since I have been with Odessa, the boys know not to come around me as often, which was great to get things like this done, but I missed the adrenaline surging throughout my veins as my body went into either fight or flight response.
I reached home and I set down the magnets, starting to work on this last piece to make everything work. I worked all throughout the night and well into the morning. Looking across the horizon, the sky that was once dark was turning a light shade of pink. I chuckled to myself, knowing how compulsive I was, I should have attempted to fall asleep instead of doing this. But what am I to do when I am driven to get this done. Before I knew it, the sun had finally risen above the highest sand dune that I could see. Leaning against the motorcycle, I looked at the device to see it was coming along pretty nicely. I smiled to myself, thinking that it wouldn't take much longer to get it done if I wasn't interrupted. After taking a short break, I pushed off of the motorcycle and got back to work.
Being too engrossed in what I was doing, I didn't hear Odessa coming up from the sand dune and make her way towards me. What caught me off guard were her hands being placed on my waist. I turned around, my face redder than the rising sun. She chuckled and looked at how flustered I had become.
"H-Hey, O-Odessa," I said, trying to compose myself and calm down.
"Did I get ya there?" she asked.
"I-I just wasn't expecting it," I laughed nervously. "I-I never took ya to be a touchy person."
"I'm not, but I had to think of something to get your attention, and," she placed her finger underneath my chin, making me look up at her. "It seems I got more than just your attention."
I chuckled and quickly turned back around, looking back at the magnet I was working on. She stood beside me and looked down at the progress I made.
"Ya made this entire thing this morning?"
"No. I-I stayed up all throughout the night doing this."
"Without rest?" she asked, her eyes widening slightly.
"Y-Yes. Why?"
"Y/N, you need your rest. To train the mind, ya also have to train the body. And in doing so, ya need your rest."
"I'm almost finished. I promise, once I'm finished, I'll get some sleep."
Odessa leaned over and placed her hand on top of the blue prints. I looked into her eyes and a stern look appeared.
"Ya need your rest more than anyone here," she said low enough for me to hear. "If we're going to do this together, I don't need ya to pass out on me."
"I-um," I stuttered, more blush crawling onto my cheeks. I was frozen. She had a way of getting me in that state of mind where my brain becomes mush. If she played her cards right, I could be at her mercy. I'd be nothing but a mess in her palm.
"Come on," she said and scooped underneath my legs, carrying me into my house.
"W-Wait, Odessa," I said.
"I'm not going to let ya touch that until ya get some rest. I don't care if we work into the night, but that means ya need to sleep once it does reach night. We don't want your sleep schedule to be all wonky, don't we?"
"My sleep schedule was already off by who knows how much," I said as she set me down on the makeshift bed.
"Well now that I'm here," she said and laid beside me. "I'm going to make sure you sleep. And if I catch you trying to sneak out, I'll only push ya harder the next time we train."
I sighed and fell beside her, looking into her amber eyes.
"I'm doing this for you, Y/N. I worry about ya sometimes when you're tinkering away up here. I worry you're going to get in trouble and I won't be there to help ya out of a situation."
I smiled and reached over, placing my hand lightly against Odessa's cheek. She reached up and grabbed my hand.
"Thanks, Dez."
"Now come here," she said and engulfed me in her strong, warm, yet welcoming arms. I chuckled to myself as I wrapped my arms around her form, closing my eyes and drifting off to sleep. Or so I led Odessa to think.
Once she was asleep, I slowly and carefully crawled out of her embrace. I sat up from the makeshift bed and was about to get up, but Odessa grabbed me from the back of my shirt and pulled me back into her chest.
"Going somewhere?" she asked.
"N-No."
"Good. Or else I'd have ya run laps around not only the junk yard, but the central area."
"You wouldn't."
"I would."
I closed my eyes and sighed, accepting defeat and finally drifted off to sleep.
