I was sobbing in Odessa's shoulder as she ran her hands up and down my back, doing everything she could to console me. I think she was trying to hold back her tears because I would hear her sniffle before blowing her nose. There was a period of silence before it was filled once more with my sobbing. She pressed kisses against my head and occassionally run her fingers through my hair. Pulling away, I looked down at her chest, not wanting to look in her eyes. She reached up, brushing a few strands of my hair away and behind my ear before placing her hand gently underneath my chin, making me look up at her.
"Love," she said in a hushed whisper. If I wasn't sitting in her lap and a few inches away from her, I wouldn't have been able to hear her. "It's going to be alright."
"A-Are ya sure, Odessa?" I asked, more tears sliding down my face.
"Of course," she said and pressed a kiss to my forehead. "Oh, love, it pains me to see ya like this. All worked up over something that we were warned about, but out of our control."
I sniffled, nodding my head. She reached over and grabbed a box of tissues, handing it to me. I grabbed a few and blew my nose before tossing them in the trash beside us. She placed her hands on my cheeks and using her thumbs, wiped my tears away, but more slid down, adding more staining to my face. Sighing, she fell onto the mattress, dragging me down with her. I placed my head on her chest, listening to her beating heart.
"What are we goin' to do?"
"Do what we normally do," she said, brushing my hair with her fingers. "Live normally and live on for the child we couldn't produce."
There was a knock on the door before it parted revealing a distressed Kiriko. Odessa sat up and looked at her friend as she made her way over to us. She was carrying a tray with two mugs on it. Setting it down on the bedside table, she sat across from us on her bed.
"I am very sorry," Kiriko said quietly.
"It's ok, Kiriko," I said, wiping my eyes and turning towards her. "You and Mercy did everythin' ya could. I don't think any of the other healers could do what ya did a few hours ago."
"Thank you, but I wish there was more we could have done."
"We had a 60% to 40% chance. We took our chances to roll the dice and we lost. There are other options."
"I know there are, but," Kiriko let out a sigh, trying to find her words.
"Don't push yourself to rationalize everythin', Kiriko," Odessa said. "Ya did your best, both you and Mercy. And that is all we could have ever asked for from the both of ya."
Kiriko nodded, "I brought in some tea to help both of you. My mother sent it to me a few weeks ago for everyone to try."
"Thank you," I said.
She stood up and walked out of the room, but she swiveled on her heels, turning back to look at us.
"Mercy, Winston, and or Tracer might be stopping in to check on you. Just wanted to give you a heads up."
"Thank you," we said and she walked out of the room, the doors parting for her and closing.
We sat in about five minutes of silence before there was another knock on the door. They parted and all three of them came in. Odessa let out a sigh, setting me down on the bed.
"I'll be right back, princess," she said and pressed a light kiss to my cheek.
She walked over to the three of them, stopping them from entering further in the room.
"If ya could please give us some time to be alone, that'd be great," she said.
"We just wanted to see how you were doing," Winston said.
"While we appreciate it, we'd appreciate it more if we had some alone time to process everythin'," Odessa said, getting a bit defensive.
"Winston, I think we should listen to Odessa," Tracer said.
"Nonsense, from what I learned about human interaction, consoling each other is a great form of overcoming grief."
"After they have had time to grief themselves," Mercy said.
"Really?" Winston asked.
"Yes. We've been friends for a while, Winston. So you know how to console us and when to come to us when we're grieving. Y/N and Odessa have their own way," Tracer said.
"I see. My apologies, Junker Queen."
"It's alright, Winston. Just please don't come in here anymore, unless it's Kiriko."
"Noted. We'll see you in the morning," Winston said, turning and walking out of the room.
Odessa came back over, scooped me up, and placed me back on her lap, holding me close.
"Ya did a good job with your composure," I said.
"I didn't want to get angry. Besides, you're my first priority, princess."
I buried my face in the crook of her neck. She moved to where she was laying against the pillows on the bed. I moved to where my lower half was in between her legs and my head was resting on her chest. She reached over and grabbed a mug, sipping it a bit.
"I won't push ya to drink the tea, but it is better when its hot."
I reached over and sipped on it, feeling the warmth it brought made my entire body relax and my mind enjoy the flavor of it, which tasted like cinnamon mixed in with some apples. I smiled slightly, letting out a small exhale before setting it down.
"Better?" she asked, brushing her hand through my hair once more.
"Sort of."
"C'mere, princess," she placed her hands on my cheeks, pulling me up to her.
Our lips pressed against one anothers. I could taste the remnants of the tea on her lips. Slightly opening my mouth, her tongue slipped in and we slowly made out with one another. I wrapped my arms around her neck, digging my hands into the back of her mohawk. Pulling away to breathe, tears slid down my face as I looked into her somber amber eyes, seeing that they were glossy as they looked into my eyes.
"I love ya, princess."
"I love you, too, Dez," I said, resting my head on her chest, falling asleep in her embrace.
