"They didn't let up even after you ignored it for ten years?" I asked Odessa as I put more letters about Overwatch on her desk.
She sighed and ran a hand through her hair, "And for once I actually don't have any paperwork to do."
Odessa has ruled Junkertown for a decade now and things have been calm for the past three years, which was nice because we were able to focus on one another since we were neglecting each other because of the duties we had. It was the first time in a long while where the warehouse wasn't swamped with orders for repairs and custom weapons or mechs. Today was the day where we were going to sit down and talk about the wedding, but with how many letters Odessa received from Overwatch, I think we were going to be talking about that today as well.
"Well, let's get the important matters out of the way," she said, patting her lap.
I walked over and sat on her lap, wrapping my legs around her waist and my arms around her neck, resting my head on her shoulder. I missed being held by her like this. It brought warmth and comfort knowing I would feel her strong arms, yet gentle hands rub along my body, soothing me in a way I didn't think was possible, but she made it all the more possible. She nuzzled her cheek against mine as she held me in silence for a bit, missing moments like this since we've been busy for a long time.
"I might have found someone to officiate the weddin'. However, I still need to meet up and talk to them in person. So I will be doing that soon."
"That's good to hear," I said, closing my eyes, taking in her aroma, which was a bit sweet like vanilla.
"Ya better not fall asleep on me," she chuckled.
"But you're just so warm and I haven't been sleeping well."
"Miss me being there for ya?"
"Yeah."
"Don't worry," she wrapped her arms around me, sitting back in the chair. "I missed ya being next to me."
"C-Can we stay like this for a bit?"
"Want to take a nap?" she chuckled.
"Yeah. I wouldn't mind a nap."
"Of course, princess," she said and kissed my cheek. "Let's both get some rest before we talk about this."
We both closed our eyes and dozed off, falling asleep with one another was something I missed ever since things started to ramp up. While we were able to come together some nights, the majority were spent alone and while I did want to come here to sleep, Odessa would usually be knocked out cold on the desk and I had no strength to carry her to the bedroom. I attempted once, but it resulted in me falling on the floor with her on top of me. Which I promptly stayed there until the morning.
I blinked my eyes open and pulled away to see Odessa was still asleep. I rested my head on her shoulder, but I felt something was wrong. Her grip around me was tighter than usual and her legs were moving about. Pulling away once more, I watched as her face scrunched up before her eyes ripped open and her breathing was getting faster. I leaned towards her, placing my hands on her cheeks.
"Easy, easy," I said. "We're not in the Wastelands anymore. I'm here, I'm here."
Her breathing calmed down and she looked into my eyes, a vulnerable look was hidden in those amber eyes of hers. She wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug.
"Sorry to scare ya there, love," she whispered.
"Ya didn't scare me," I said.
She nodded, but stood up, walking towards the door.
"Where are we going?"
"Home. I can't stand being in here for this long."
She opened the front door and closed it with her foot, locking it behind her. We walked back home and when we reached it, she saw there were more letters. Sighing, she kicked them out of the way before unlocking the door, walking inside. Closing the door with her foot, she walked over to the bedroom and set me down.
"I'll be right back. I need to clean up the mess I made outside," she said and opened the door, closing it behind her.
She came back a few minutes later with one of the letters in her hand. She was reading it intently and her expression changed from the first time she read one of them.
"Is it something different this time?" I asked.
"Yeah. Someone named Winston is writing this time. The previous times there was no signature at the bottom."
"You were summoned by someone named Winston?"
"Yes. He's like the leader of Overwatch."
"So ya never heard of Overwatch, never heard of Winston, and ya don't know exactly what you're going to be facing."
"Yes."
"What are ya gonna do?"
She sighed and sat down beside me, "If they need me, I might as well go."
"You're going to walk in there without knowing what's at stake for ya?"
"If there is something that needs to be fought for, I will fight with whomever needs help."
"If you're going, then how come the others aren't?"
"Don't worry, they came to me with the same letters asking if I was receiving them. I told them yes and that I wasn't going. They said they weren't going to go unless I was going as well. They didn't want to leave ya alone without any help in the warehouse."
"That was thoughtful of them," I said.
There was a long pause before Odessa turned to me, "Winston said that if they don't need us anymore, they're going to send us back. He didn't give me an estimate on how long they'll need us, but I hope it won't be for long."
I shook my head, "You're really going to go without knowing anything more about Overwatch? About who you're fighting against if you need to fight against anyone?"
"I have a duty to my people. And now I have a duty to the world. I will come back, Y/N."
There was another long pause before Odessa reached over, placing her hand on my cheek, caressing it with her thumb.
"When I get back, and I promise I will come back. That is a promise on my life, Y/N. When I return, we will have our talk of getting married."
I nodded my head, silent tears sliding down my face.
"Y/N?" she asked, making me look up at her.
"Yes, Dez?"
"Take care of Junkertown for me," she said, pressing a kiss to my lips.
