"She knew, didn't she?"

April 2025

"I'm going to assume that the men we're looking for are those jacked guys in fake military garb," Kate deducted from the trio's spot in an alleyway across the street from the law office.

"You do realize that now we've brought them three people to make money off of right?" Matt questioned the two young women who shared a look before Yelena shrugged.

"There's only two of them, I'm not all the worried," Yelena stated before she started walking across the street leaving the other two to follow. Matt's mouth opened and closed a few times before he was left trailing after his bonus children.

Yelena's eyes were narrowed in on the two men, one was tall and lean while the other was shorter and beefier, the tall one had a head full of blonde hair while the shorter one was balding. She was certain even if they were packing that she could take them.

Except Matt seemed to have other plans as as soon as he stepped into the alley and out of sight his cane was on the ground and his fists were landing on the shorter man's face.

The taller one reached for a gun that was tucked into his jeans but Yelena kicked her leg out and knocked the gun right into Kate's hand. She then pushed her foot into the man's chest and sent him stumbling into the brick wall right next to his partner.

These men were amateurs just as the ones before them. People who saw a big dollar sign and thought it'd be an easy and quick payday, they were wrong.

Kate cringed at the sickening crack that came from the man in Matt's arms forearm as the lawyer twisted it causing a pained yell to emit from his throat.

"You know when they said you were blind I thought it was a joke," The man in front of Yelena spit out as he turned his head towards Matthew with his eyes narrowed.

"Who told you that?" Matt asked as he pressed the bald man's face into the cement, he could smell the blood dripping down the bricks but he didn't care in the slightest.

Kate and Yelena shared a look, they knew where the list had come from, but nobody had told Matt. Cecilia didn't want him to put the suit back on, she didn't want him to uproot his life again, but there was no stopping that now.

The taller man simply smirked and shrugged his shoulders but the lawyer wasn't having it, he kicked his foot out and hit the side of the man's knee, hard. They heard a popping noise followed by the man yelling as he started to crumple to the ground.

It was startling how similar Matt and Cecilia were, the same tone of voice, the same use of violence for answers. It was safe to say that Cece was carrying his legacy out flawlessly.

"Ahh—fine, it was Kingpin!" The bald man cried out as Matthew put pressure on his other arm until he heard it snap also. The name made the man freeze, he didn't need any further explanation.

Kingpin, a man who had tried to ruin his life, on numerous occasions. A man who knew his secret and was now trying to use money to kill not only him but his family. Kate could see Matt's body tremble slightly with rage before he slammed the man's head against the concrete a final time before letting his unconscious body fall.

He sucked in a deep breath before turning towards the other one, his blue eyes staring down at the lawyer as he awaited his own painful future.

"I have a message for him," Matt started, his voice eerily calm and steady as he crouched down to be face to face with the 'assassin'. Yelena stepped back to allow the man room and stood shoulder to shoulder with Kate, both realizing that Cecilia's attempts to keep Matt in the dark were now futile.

"He came after me and mine, and now we're coming for him," Matt grit out through clenched teeth, he listened to the man's heartbeat telling him that he was scared, good.

Kate jumped slightly as Matt punched this man into unconsciousness also. The alleyway fell into silence, neither of the girls knowing what to say to the man who considered them family. Was he going to be upset that they didn't tell him?

They watched as he stood tall, his hands that were clenched into fists shaking slightly, they waited for him to catch his breath as he ran a hand through his hair and then turned to them.

"She knew, didn't she? That it was Fisk behind all of this?" He asked, his voice strained and his eyes cast over Kate's shoulder.

Kate opened her mouth to respond but she couldn't find the words, there was no point in lying because he would know, but she also didn't want to talk about it without Cecilia present.

"Yeah, we did," Yelena answered when Kate couldn't.

"We've been dealing with him since Christmas," Kate added causing Matt to scoff quietly and shake his head. He knew she was keeping something from him, he just didn't know it was this.

"Just uh—head home. I'll talk to her later," Matthew replied as he went and grabbed his cane before leaving them in the alley with the two battered men.

Kate frowned deeply as she realized this was going to cause issues between the father and daughter. The secret was out of the bag and the two heroes had a feeling that Matthew was contemplating getting himself involved in a way that Cecilia wouldn't like.
