"Objection!"

January 2025

The courtroom was buzzing with light chatter of the students and parents that were watching, but there was something sinister in the air. And it was coming from the opposing side of the courtroom. Her opposition, Alex Druthers, was sitting with his father who happened to be one of the best and richest lawyers in the city.

His cloudy brown eyes were staring her down with a menacing glare, Alex wasn't a very good student and he would be an even worse lawyer, but they had money and influence so it would be a miracle if she won this case.

Her father was sitting in the chair next to her acting as her paralegal, he hadn't said much but Cecilia was sure he was thinking the same things she was. That they were utterly screwed if their evidence didn't work.

"Oh man, she looks like she's shitting bricks right now," Kate whispered as she leaned over to Yelena and Peter who were seated in the pews next to her. Yelena shrugged as she watched her roommate glare daggers at the opposition.

"Nah, she looks like she's going to tear that kid a new one," The blonde responded, her accent thick as she looked at the two brunettes she was seated between.

And it was true, both statements. Peter could hear her elevated heart rate, but he could also see the snarl her lips were curled into every time her classmate opened his mouth. And honestly, it was terrifying, Peter was beyond thankful to have not been on the receiving ends of one of those looks yet.

"So, you raised the prices of rent, on these rent-controlled buildings, without telling any of the tenants. Therefore displacing nearly twenty families, including my client?" Cecilia questioned as she stepped up to the stand where a young spoiled billionaire sat. His father owned several housing developments and when he died the eldest Cameron child inherited all of them.

"Objection, your honor, hearsay."

Cecilia furrowed her eyebrows and turned her entire body towards the Druthers boy, her face showed confusion as her question wasn't hearsay and instead, the statement of her client just reworded for confirmation.

"Overruled," The judge sighed in irritation. It was clear that they were grasping at straws with all of the objections they had thrown Murdock's way.

"Mr. Cameron, did you or did you not raise rent without informing your tenants?" Cecilia's tone showed that she was entirely over repeating the same question over and over again as she paced in front of the stand.
