AN

okay -- so this isn't Act Two, but this is a preview of the next book in this series, PENNY AND DIME, it's an eventual Kate x OC story, but it's also so much more than that. This story has a piece of me in it, my creation of this character is from something I learned from experience and a sad reality that we live in.

This does contain a TRIGGER WARNING for SA, Violence, blood, gore, and everything else that occurs in the Marvel Universe.

But I do hope you enjoy.

DECEMBER 2023, FORT DRUM, NY

Snow fell from the sky in an angry flurry, so much so that you couldn't see someone standing two feet away. The flakes were fluffy and heavy, falling rapidly and leaving a blanket of white covering the ground.

Despite the beautiful view, the air was fridged and cold. The wind was piercing and the air so dry it hurt. The December chill left a frost on the windows, but inside it was sweltering. So warm that it felt suffocating if you wore more than one layer.

And Dayanara felt like she was suffocating, but for different reasons.

"Reyes, Reyes are you even listening to me?"

Dayanara blinked slowly as she glanced away from the frozen window and towards the man across from her, at his tone, she straightened her back and met him in the eye.

"Sorry Major Holland," She responded, the man sighed and removed the glasses from his face before pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Look kid, this is a tough spot you've been put in. But you signed the papers, you've gotta take it or stay in," The man replied as he gestured towards her contract that was opened on the desk in front of him.

The young woman clenched her jaw to hide the fact her bottom jaw wanted to tremble, not with sadness though. It trembled with something more powerful than that. Dayanara was filled with pure unbridled rage.

She was angry at an endless list of people. She was angry with herself for signing that stupid contract in the first place, she was mad at the men responsible for her even being in this situation. Dayanara was unbelievably angry at the system for failing her and countless others despite them putting their lives on the line.

She was so violently angry at the fact she had fought for a country and a government that didn't value her as a person, they didn't value her rights or what she had given up to be there.

Yet none of that showed on her face. What her peers saw was an empty-eyed woman who was lying about what happened to her. What her government saw was a woman who had done something criminal, something so morally unacceptable that she was no longer worth their time.

Dayanara grabbed the pen from the desk and signed her soul with a blank face.

The doctor went to speak but she was already out the door. Nothing would be the same, that the Reyes woman knew.

The government had failed not only her but countless others. She wasn't going to take that, she didn't give every piece of her heart and soul only to be fucked over in the end. She wasn't going to let her life be ruined while those who did this to her faced no consequences.

Dayanara had looked death in face, the men that did this to her were cowards. Something she wasn't, and she was going to make sure that they knew that.

Whatever it takes.
