The Marvelous Musician, a fantasy retelling of the original story collected by the Brothers Grimm

Fantasy!Sammy, traveling musician and occasional storyteller.

There was once upon a time a marvelous musician. A blonde man with beautiful blue eyes and equipped with a lovely fiddle. Always called the beauty of the town, he was not only appealing to look at, but he was also greatly talented. He left his music partner back at his hometown, the words to his rhythm, greatest pal throughout the years, and left to pursue his own life.

One day he was wandering through a wood all by himself, thinking of everything until there wasn't anything else to think about. The silence was never so loud. He could play his instrument, but he didn't in fear of the world shattering around himself if he dared disturb the noise. Despite this, he said aloud to himself:

"Time passes so slowly when you're alone in the woods," he mused. "I should have brought Jack with me instead of leaving him behind. Perhaps I should find a new companion."

How could he find someone in the middle of the woods though?

Okay, let's think, what can draw people out. Music?

He took his fiddle out and fiddled to his heart's content. It didn't take long for him to get into the feel of the music. After a time, a wolf, or really a young boy with light brown – borderline ginger – hair came through the thicket and walked up to the musician.

"Oh! A wolf, is it?" he mumbled in disgust at the wolf. "I didn't ask for a pet that constantly needs attention."

But Wally approached him and said:

"Woah!" his ears were perked up and his green eyes sparkled with adoration. "That was incredible! I wish I knew how to play an instrument."

"That's easily achievable," Sammy waved his hand in dismissal.

"Wait, really! Can you teach me?"

"... Well fine. I'll teach you, but only if you do exactly as I say."

"Of course I will," Wally quickly replied, his tail wagging in delight. "I can promise that I won't be in any trouble!"

So, he joined Sammy on the way to the nearest village, and after a time they came to an old oak tree, which was hollow and had a crack in the middle of the trunk. Sammy stuck his head inside and a small satyr ran out, turning back around and flipping the middle finger before continuing on their way.

'Now,' said the Musician, ignoring the strange interaction. It was a forest he was mostly unfamiliar with, after all. And judging by the tea set, they were having a solitary tea party. "If you want to learn to fiddle, here's your first instruction. Don't mess this up. Lay your front hands – paws? – in this crack."

After a quick nod, the brunette did as he was told, and the traveling musician quickly grabbed the wolf's coat, and forced his body into the crack as Wally let out a yelp in surprise.

"Wait there till I return," said the Musician, "And perhaps you'll understand this lesson."

He left the wolf behind, ignoring the pleas for help. There was no lesson, just the great Sammy would be accompanied by a wolf of all things. Last one he encountered tried to attack him with an axe, narrowly avoiding getting the weapon slammed into his skull.

That wasn't a fun time.

After some time, he realized that he still hasn't found a new friend yet. So he drew out his fiddle, and fiddled away, this time with a quicker tune. A fox, again, really just a young boy with brown hair and a bulky messenger bag, peeked his head out of a nearby bush.
