"Guilt is one of those emotions that feeds on itself. With every bite it gets a little heavier."

Brooklyn, New York
June, 2024

LUCY HUMMED TO HERSELF AS she grasped a few beers from the ice box, wiping the residual water and handing it to Leah. She took them with ease, giving her a smile before turning towards the customers who'd ordered. Lucy turned back to the sushi plates, grasping a few and putting them on a broad serving platter. She carried it with ease, stopping in front of a table and balancing it with one hand. She carefully handed each of the customers a plate of their food. They were a quaint family of four, and didn't cease their conversation as she came and went.

The lights in the blackened room were dimly lit, a perfect oasis for couples but also a nice atmosphere for a family. The restaurant had been relatively new when they'd moved to Brooklyn, and Lucy had applied for a job as a waitress since she might've sent most of her back pay to Matteo, Xialing and Klause.

It might've been an impulsive idea, but Matteo had been blipped like everyone else, and her friend needed help. Xialing hadn't been blipped, but had been running low on funds because Henry had gotten blipped. And well, Klause would give the money to Henry, and he'd gain everything he'd lost.

At least, that's what Lucy's intentions had been.

So her back pay might have been reaching a dangerously low number, and James was really the only one keeping their lives afloat. It wasn't like relying on her husband was a bad thing, but she really didn't want to have him concerned with money. She guessed having wealth was undeniably comfortable.

Besides, Lucy had worked as a waitress once before, way back when, so she was pretty capable of working at the restaurant.

She walked back into the kitchen, placing the serving tray back underneath the other plates. She exited swiftly afterwards, finding herself next to Leah once again. She settled another plate of sushi in front of someone as Leah grasped a glass and filled it with water.

"Another bottle of sake, lady." One of the customers called.

Then again, there were those occasional customers that called themselves regulars even though they were really just prowling men who were looking for something Lucy was not offering.

"Coming right up." Lucy said with a smile.

It was the only thing that would keep her sane really. She supposed working in customer service was something she'd been irrevocably good at in the past. And it was in the past for a reason. She held back a sigh as she turned around and searched for a new container of sake.
