LUCY HAS HALF A SECOND to realize there are hostiles before a grenade is thrown her way, and something akin to panic settles in her bones. It's not like she's surprised by the weapon or the HYDRA agents staring at her with sweat beading down their temples. The anxiety in the air was palpable, and she found herself more concerned for them than herself. She was, however, panicked by a sudden thought that blurted itself into her mind—

She'd forgotten to turn the oven off after taking a fresh loaf of bread out of it.

Not that her Japanese bread even mattered at this point. She could only hope that James had caught onto her mistake and had turned the oven off for her. Otherwise their apartment would most likely be burnt to a crisp, and that would send the rest of the residents to a new building. She shook her head at the pessimistic thought.

Their neighbor would probably notice something was off, and possibly turn the stove off then–

There was an ear-splitting explosion and Lucy winced at the shockwave it sent down her ears. She glanced down at her hand, which still clutched the grenade. Or well, what was left of it anyway. The fiery fires of metal shrapnel roared at the center of her palm, collecting together with black magic and molecular wisps, tracking ever burning heat signature and tossing it back.

Lucy glanced up at the agents, who lifted their weapons futilely.

She reared her arm back and threw the abomination of a grenade at their face. She darted across the hall as she tackled one of the agents, grasping his rifle and snapping it upwards to shoot the other agents in the shoulder. The pair toppled backwards into the wall, gripping at their arms with cries of pain. Lucy disintegrated their guns before they could reach for them.

"Hail HYDRA, am I right boys?" She grinned sarcastically, giving them a mock salute.

She turned down the hall as another explosion shook the ground underneath her. A part of her thanked god that she'd brought Alpine onto the quinjet. If she had left their cat in an apartment that still had an oven going, then their furry child would be injured, if not killed.
