"One day we will find each other and realize we are nothing but strangers."

Scarsdale, New York
January, 2025

THEY MOVED TO SCARSDALE IN October, packing up what little things they owned and bringing it with them to the suburban home. Their neighbors were kind the first week they moved in, gushing over Angeliko and Karli, noting how well they were growing. Lucy held cookouts in their backyard, attempting her best to make new acquaintances.

James found a friend in the neighbor to their right– Caleb– while Lucy found a friend in Amira, who lived to their left with a quaint family and a child.

Angeliko had experienced his very first Halloween with Karli, and the four of them had ventured about the neighborhood. Lucy and James kept an eye out for any possible threats while Karli carefully shepherded Angeliko around the sidewalk, keeping him out of the road and making sure to attain lots of candy.

Thanksgiving came and went, Lucy cooking a turkey for the first time in a while, while Karli mashed up potatoes and made her very own green bean casserole. James had worked on the pies while Angeliko floated around the utensils to make the table. They'd eaten all together without a single hitch in the kitchen, even though Lucy was surprised that James hadn't burned the house down.

Christmas was just another occasion that flew past them. Gifts had been exchanged, but their shopping had all been online. Angeliko and Karli played in the snow for hours, being able to with all their enhancements, although they did come back inside before it looked too suspicious. They put up a tree physically, without any molecular abilities, and put out cookies for Santa.

Before the four of them knew it, they were in a brand new year, and their family had managed to grow closer– far more interweaved than before. And they loved it. Sure, there were some hills and bumps that appeared in the night, when nightmares became known, but it wasn't horrible.

They moved forwards together, a formidable force that didn't back down from anything.

Lucy and James couldn't remember a time they'd been happier in the 21st century. For decades it had only been torture or dreary endless uncertainty. Now, in their four bedroom suburban house, with Alpine's private backyard and a chicken coop with baby chicks running about, well, life was enjoyable.

They weren't surviving anymore– they were just living.

And wasn't that so amazing?

They were living a happy life that involved their biological son and their adoptive daughter, Karli.
