"To doubt is to start believing."Delacroix, Louisiana
August, 2024LUCY HUMMED TO HERSELF as Angeliko slept on her back, her hands holding onto him with care. Her fingers were moving, twitching around as pans floated around the room, flour pouring into a bowl to her right while she cracked eggs inside. A spoon stirred it evenly and she flipped the pancakes currently cooking. A few chocolate chips found their way into the flat cakes.
Footsteps echoed from above and Lucy turned slightly as Sarah padded into the living room. She looked at her, and Lucy looked back at her. She avoided her eyes, waiting for Sarah to say anything. A soft smile formed on Sarah's face. She leaned against the kitchen counter.
"Are you feeling better?" She asked.
Lucy blinked.
She expected yelling and anger. She expected fear and hatred. That Lucy and James would have to leave– that Angeliko wouldn't be able to spend time with AJ and Cass because she was dangerous; because she had a damn nightmare at the worst time of night.
So, she had to blink a few times, comprehend the expression on Sarah's face, before she understood that Sarah was okay with her. That Sarah was worried about her and not– and not worried about the fact Lucy was a ticking time bomb– a danger.
"Yeah." Lucy didn't tear up. "I'm– I'm sorry about that. It uh– it happens and I–"
Sarah shook her head.
"Don't worry about it, Lucy." She assured. "I've seen nightmares get bad."
Whoever Sarah was referring to, Lucy had a very high suspicion that it was Sam. She didn't ask about it though, since Sam's business was his own. She gave Sarah a small smile, nodding her head, before turning back to the pancakes that finished cooking.
She floated them over to the plates already set up on the dining table. Sarah's eyes filled with wonder as she watched the food move past her. Her smile grew and she turned back towards the stairs, calling for Cass and AJ.
Lucy chuckled to herself as Angeliko let out a loud yawn. She patted him reassuringly, before pouring more pancake batter. She added blueberries to these instead, knowing the kids probably needed more nutritious food.
A loud gasp brought her out of her focus and she turned her head to see Cass and AJ looking at her with wide eyes.
"Woah! Mom, the pancakes are floating!" AJ gaped as he adjusted his glasses.
