"Sometimes the worst ideas are the only ideas."
Baltimore, Maryland July, 2024
LUCY TOOK A CAUTIOUS STEP back from the officers as they motioned her towards a cell that did not have James in it. She bumped into James, practically burrowing herself into his side as she kept Alpine tight between her arms. There was a threat in her eyes, and the four officers stood around them with uncertain eyes.
None of them were willing to mess with the pair, especially when Lucy had full control of her abilities and was being protected by a very stoic, very powerful super soldier with a metal arm. They pursed their lips, hands on their hips as they thought to themselves.
Lucy was not going to be separated by James.
She was not.
"Look, we know you guys got some trauma and don't want to be separated, but we usually. . ." one of the officers tried to reason.
The moment he started speaking Lucy stared at him with an unwavering look. She pushed herself into James again. He wrapped his arms around her, taking a step forward. Lucy understood what he wanted and entered the cell with him. They ignored the benches and sat down on the ground in the furthest corner away from the door
The officers looked a little lost, not used to their willingness to be in a cell.
"I guess. . .just this once." Another one of them said as they moved forwards, shutting and locking the door.
Lucy flinched at the sound of the door clicking.
James looked at her, and she curled into his side. Alpine moved to nestle with them. She hid her face in his chest, breathing deeply to keep her heart rate in check. She refused to close her eyes, listening to James's heartbeat instead.
He shifted slightly and Lucy stiffened, holding onto him even tighter.
"It's okay, Lu." James assured gently. "Try to take a nap."
She shook her head.
"Can't." She murmured. "What if–What if I wake up and it's just. . ."
James stopped, his breath coming out silently.
"What if it's just the hospital, what if I–I never left and Henry is still–" she swallowed hard.
She didn't want to sleep here, not when it was a cell. Not when she could wake up without James in her arms. Without him besides her. She didn't want that, and she didn't trust the officers. For all they knew, some of them could have been HYDRA and they would never know.
