"Love comes in many forms, as many as there are hearts to hold it."Cairo, Egypt
January, 2025"SO YOU'RE SAFE, THEN?" James's voice was refreshing against her ears as she gazed at him through the holographic screen.
Marc had led them back into town, seeking any man who knew of Senfu's sarcophagus. That was what could lead them to Ammit's tomb. Lucy didn't have any better ideas so she agreed with him and traveled back down to the area they'd been staying in. As Marc asked questions, Lucy took the time to call James to make sure he wasn't worrying his head off.
She smiled at him as he adjusted Angeliko in between his arms.
"As safe as anyone in Cairo can be." She looked at Angeliko, something sharp and painful hitting her heart– she missed him. "How's my little 'Liko?"
Angeliko beamed at her.
He held his hands up to the holographic screen, making grabby hands at her as if she could pick him up, right through the screen. God, she wished she could. She wished she could hold tightly to him and tell him that Mama was going to be right home.
She could. She could leave Marc and Khonshu and go home. She'd done what they'd asked of her, saved Nephthys from being trapped in stone. So. . .so–she could leave this and go home.
But that wouldn't sit well in her heart.
The more Marc and Khonshu spoke about Ammit, the more she understood that this could become a serious threat if Ammit is released, and not sealed again.
It was the only thing stopping herself from running back home to pick up Angeliko and spin him around; to ruffle Karli's hair and watch her pout in defiance; to kiss James on his forehead and hold him like he would disappear.
But she could do none of that when her conscience told her how awful it would be to not stop a possible world-ending scenario.
"Mama, Papa doesn't cook all the fancy foods!" Angeliko complained. "He only makes soups and fried eggs and the tomato soup isn't as yummy as Mama's! You need to come home fast, or Papa's gonna ruin the kitchen forever!"
James gasped, placing a hand over his heart, pretending to be very offended.
Angeliko froze for a second, as if he'd forgotten he was sitting in his lap. He looked up at him with a sheepish look, giggling when James started to tickle him. He shrieked happily, kicking his feet at him. James stopped after Angeliko almost knocked over the phone he'd set up.
