The three of them did a one-eighty and sprinted as fast as their legs could carry them, muscles burning, rapid breaths clouding in front of their faces. Bullets trailed after them, kicking up ice and dirt around their feet ruthlessly, whizzing past their heads as they ducked and stumbled.
Five had snatched up her hand immediately and he pulled her along to keep up with him.
They closed the distance on the nearest thing to them which happened to be a tractor stagnant in the snow. It was the only thing they had a chance to sheild themselves behind and the very second they reached it, Diego and Five dove down behind it, the latter yanking Lena down with him.
Her knees scraped against the icy grass as she half fell against him, hands landing on his shoudlers as they nearly headbutted. She exhaled shakily, falling back onto her hands, melting the snow beneath them rapidly and making her palms slick with water. Bullets kicked up around them, lashing into the back of the tractor and they all leant in, covering their ears and heads as they mercilessly fired their guns.
Her breaths came out in rapid little clouds in front of her face as she fought to catch her breath, shifting into a crouch between their outstretched legs but facing the two.
"Can you get us to the house?" Diego breathed, resting his head back against the giant wheel while taking deep, shuddering breaths.
Five attempted to use his abilities, a blue glow surrounding his clenched fists before dying out into nothing. He slumped back against the tractor, face contorting in pain.
"I-I'm too tired..." He exhaled heavily, heart pounding as he lifted his eyes to meet Lena's who was in front of the two.
Her mind was racing and she met his with a certain unreadable look that had his heart skipping a beat.
"Lena-" Five was cautious but she cut him off.
"-don't touch me."
The tone of voice she had used was a warning.
Lena placed one hand on the floor and amongst the wet grass, clearing a patch beneath her and melting the snow. She let out a deep exhale, adrenaline pumping, and swallowed as a burning coarsed through her veins. Her eyes glowed a blinding white and after a fraction of a second, she closed her eyes and exhaled slowly.
The roaring gunfire dissipated slowly, cutting out one row at a time before the air rang with silence, the thundering footsteps fading into nothing.
Five and Diego exchanged a quick look, before taking the shock period to glance out beyond the edge of the tractor at their attackers.
The dozens of rows of assassins stood along the battlefield like toy soldiers, frozen in place. Everything quiet, everything halted. Then, as the gentle breeze drifted by, they collapsed like crumbling stone and what was left of their burnt bodies coated the snow like a dirty layer of ash. Guns with no owners fell to the floor one by one.
"Holy shit..." Diego breathed, staring at how the wind had simply pulled apart the remaining atoms of their body and clung to the earth like dust.
In the distance they saw the smile falter on Lila's face, but not the Handlers. The woman raised her hand again, arching an eyebrow as though to say did you really think I didn't prepare for this? And when she snapped her fingers again, dozens, no, hundreds more replaced the assassins just standing in a flash.
Lena's expression faltered as she met the womans gaze across the field.
She had known.
Within a split second, the bullets picked up again and tore through the thick silence.
