Chapter Thirty-eight Payback Time

Weeks passed and everything was settled in court. They are scheduled for tomorrow morning. Samantha grabbed her cell and dialed Augustus' number. Bryan was sitting beside her, giving her courage.

After a few rings, Augustus finally picked up. "This is Samantha. Northern Court, 8 am, tomorrow." She said straight.

Augustus' voice was rusty, "Haven't you changed your mind? You know you can always go back here and be with me."

Samantha took a deep breath before responding, trying to keep her voice steady. "No, Augustus. I have made my decision."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and Samantha could almost feel Augustus' anger boiling over. Finally, he spoke in a low, menacing tone. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you."

She paced around the room, her heart racing with fear and anxiety. She knew that Augustus would try to stop her from leaving, but she had made up her mind. She couldn't keep living in fear, and she couldn't let Augustus hurt her or their kid any longer.

Bryan noticed the fear in Samantha's eyes as she hung up the phone. He walked over to her and gently placed his hand on her shoulder. "What's wrong, Sam?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.

"It's Augustus," Samantha replied, her voice trembling. "He's filing for custody of our daughter."

Bryan's heart sank at the news. He knew how much Samantha loved her daughter and couldn't imagine the pain she must be feeling at the thought of losing her. "Don't worry, Sam," he said, trying to reassure her. "I won't let him take her away from you. We'll do whatever it takes to make sure you get to keep your daughter, well...our daughter"

Samantha looked up at him, tears welling up in her eyes. "Thank you, Bryan," she whispered, feeling a glimmer of hope.

Bryan pulled her into a hug, holding her tight. "You don't have to worry about that," he said his gentle voice. "I'm here for you, always."

The next morning, they're already in court. They left Brylle to Bryan's fellow doctor.

As soon as Augustus arrived, Samantha and Bryan exchanged worried glances. They couldn't believe their eyes when they saw him looking decent and put together. It was a stark contrast to his disheveled appearance.
