There had to be a way that he would at least see a sparkle in Elena's eyes. The only moment, at least a real one, was when Laswell mentioned the man named Vargas. And if, in fact, a colonel named Vargas from Mexico, had caused a reaction, perhaps he owned her heart too. If they ever happened to meet the man together, Gaz would not hear the end of it or, possibly, get beaten. What Vargas would be doing so far away from Elena, though, Gaz didn't mull over in his head, as he had already reached the door.
No. Elena probably wasn't together with him and there was nothing to worry about. Gaz thought to himself that learning that information would be impossible anyway. He would be happy to hear even hear about her favorite color.
''Price and Laswell confirmed,'' Gaz started when he entered the room. He decided to keep his Captain's comments about the curfew to himself. He would call it a successful evening even if she walked around with him for thirty minutes.
''Good,'' Elena nodded, shutting the laptop off and standing up. She walked over to the entrance where Gaz was and reached for her jacket—the same chic black leather one.
Elena closed the door behind the two and headed toward the elevator. The ride down, of course, was silent. But Gaz was absolutely fine with that. The elevator doors opened with a ding and they walked past the receptionist.
''Excuse me,'' the man spoke up, catching their attention. ''Could you come up here for a second?''
Gaz nodded quickly and walked over to him, Elena following him close.
''We close the reception at 9:00, so I won't be here,'' the man explained. He handed Gaz something. ''The key to the entrance... in case you come back later than that.''
''Oh, thank you,'' Gaz replied and nodded.
Having placed the key in the pocket of his jeans, Gaz opened the entrance door, letting Elena through first.
''Thank you,'' she said softly.
Gaz smiled and the door closed behind them quietly.
''So... where are you taking me?'' Elena asked, turning to him.
Gaz sighed and looked around hopefully.
''Probably shouldn't go where we were,'' he said and cracked a smile. Elena, tilting her head to one side, nodded in agreement. ''Let's just see what Amsterdam has to offer us?''
Elena nodded again. A silent agreement, nothing more.
The two began walking down, passing countless tourist-attraction shops that sold overpriced magnets and postcards. As they were looking at shops, buildings, or the people in them, only small comments escaped from either Gaz or Elena. Mostly Gaz though.
''Oh, nice view,'' Gaz said, taking out his phone.
The two were standing on a small bridge. It wasn't anything too special, but it had caught the eyes of Gaz. There were far too many bridges to keep count and they had already walked over several ones.
''Yeah,'' Elena added, resting her hands against the cold rails. It was evening, after all. Nothing like the sunny autumn morning they felt in the morning.
She looked over as Gaz was holding his phone out to capture the moment in front of them. The view was truly beautiful, with the street lights and gleam coming from the buildings, both homely and shop-like, shined on the water. It was all different sorts of colors.
''C-can you take a picture of me?'' Gaz asked, turning his body over to her.
His smile grew when Elena accepted his phone and stepped away, looking both ways on the road, before standing in the middle of the street. The slight wind was blowing her hair to one side and she, in Gaz's eyes, looked quite captivating.
