Elena's head had been resting against the car window, her face averted from Gaz for most of the ride. They had spare few words during their flight too. Their journey had been quieter than any moments they had ever shared.
''You should be able to see it soon enough,'' Price pointed out, clearing his throat, and breaking the silence.
Elena looked through the tiny plane window closely, trying to spot the base. They would stay there until things cleared out until people like Alejandro, Rudolfo, and others took care of things. Elena wanted to participate and not sulk in the feelings that overwhelmed her.
When the plane landed safely in the base and Elena, yet again to avoid Gaz's concerned look, had to turn her eyes away from the window through which she had been gazing since the captain had told her about it.
''We'll be safe here,'' Kate whispered to Elena when they stepped foot off the plane and the wind was gushing around them.
''I know,'' Elena nodded, pursing her lips, as she saw a dozen faces staring down at them.
''I have to go over things with John, but... please try...'' Kate continued to speak, as she looked around, her eyes briefly stopping at Gaz, and then turning back to Elena. ''try to take your mind off things... off of all of that. Hang in with Kyle and the others. The people here are nice. You'd like the force too, I think.''
Silence followed by Elena shooting up her eyebrows and looking over to the woman. A demanding look from Kate. That meant that Elena had to listen to her.
''I'll try...'' Elena followed in a defeated tone.
Elena knew herself and her life well enough to understand the root of the issue. She hadn't always found it infuriatingly hard to fit in with a group of people and feel welcome, but too many things in her life had caused her mistrust. In fact, a lack of trust wasn't the only issue when it came to meeting people. Now, she just didn't want anything to do with most people, because she knew how things would end.
''Gaz,'' Price grunted the soldier's name and turned around before they entered the large building. ''be so kind and show the lady around. Show her the dining hall, training rooms, and where she'll be sleeping.''
''Copy that,'' Gaz nodded.
''Kate, let's get to business,'' Price continued, shifting his gaze to the woman next to Elena.
The two exchanged small nods before Price and Kate entered through the large doors. Elena turned to Gaz, finally meeting his eyes.
''I can show you a bit around the base, but- yeah, it's nothing that unusual,'' Gaz spoke in a careless voice.
''Sure,'' Elena muttered and began to follow him.
Silence again. Even though they were walking next to each other and Elena was expecting Gaz to at least crack a joke now and then about the basketball court or the 'fresh meat', nothing happened. He barely uttered more than a few words when passing by and pointing something out.
''The 141 stays at a different part of the base though, so... yeah,'' Gaz told Elena when they had reached the hallway where she'd be staying.
''Makes sense,'' she nodded.
Gaz stood straight, unlike the usual look where he'd lean against the wall and look at her with a half-cracked smile.
''We- we'll be having dinner in an hour, so you can get cleaned up... over there,'' he spoke again, nodding his head toward a door at the end of the hallway. ''come join us at the dining hall.''
Elena nodded, starting to feel a strange creeping feeling inside. She pushed that away by clearing her throat.
''Do the 141 eat separately too or can I join you?'' she asked in a hopeful tone.
