''Kyle?'' the whisper left Elena's lips.
Gaz's eyes instantly opened after his pitiful attempt to fall asleep.
''Yeah?''
"Are you sleeping?"
After a short pause, Gaz turned his head over to the sound of her voice.
''Nah... can't fall asleep. You?''
Gaz waited for her reply.
''No,'' Elena responded and Gaz sighed. Then, out of nowhere, causing Gaz's eyebrows to instantly furrow and his heart to instantly melt, she spoke again. ''I'm r-really cold.''
There was a hint of vulnerability in the air.
''You're cold?'' Gaz asked to confirm.
Another loud breath echoed in the room. On the floor, Gaz considered her words. He didn't feel that cold. But what did her words intend? Her feeling of fear or actual cold? Her being alone in the bed or simply being ice cold?
''Y-yeah,'' Elena replied and slightly shifted in the bed. The aftermath of the day's events seemed to have seeped into the room, and the chill in the air mirrored the lingering tension.
The silence resumed for a moment, broken only by the crackling of the candle and the distant sounds of the night.
What could he do?
Should he do what he was thinking about doing?
As the quiet settled between them, Gaz couldn't ignore the invisible thread connecting them.
Just ask it, you idiot-
Gaz swallowed.
It's only because she's cold-
He blinked several times, feeling that Elena hurt more each second without action.
The worst she could say-
''Could you come up with me in the bed, please?''
Elena's question struck Gaz, as he felt his heart pick up its pace. Without another word, Gaz rose from the floor, moving closer to the bed.
''Of course,'' he replied, looking over at the shaking figure in front of him. Poor Elena, he thought to himself. Turning around, he grabbed the pillow that had been placed on the floor and carefully placed it beneath Elena's head. Not that he needed it for himself anyway.
Clearing his throat, he paused and looked at her. She was avoiding his gaze, looking at her trembling hands. Gaz lingered by the bedside.
''D-do you want me to come beside you?'' he asked.
Elena nodded nervously.
The small single bed awaited him. The room, dimly lit by the soft glow of the candle, seemed to close in around them, creating an intimate space insulated from the outside world.
''You move more to the inside. I'll stay on the outside,'' he said softly and watched as Elena slowly moved herself, her face flinching from the movement and pain that it caused her.
Carefully, Gaz settled onto the bed, mindful of the limited space after she had moved toward the wall. Firstly, taking a seat on the bed, he slowly slid into a sleeping position on his back. His body was finally in the bed, and the first thing he took notice of was the visible shaking to his left.
He swallowed and looked in her direction. Concern etched across his face. The poor thing, he thought, looking at her.
''You're shaking...'' he whispered.
