The following day dawned with an eerie calm at the military base. Arriving home was a blur to Elena and after the return of Kate and Price, everything happened too fast. In fact, Elena fell asleep again on the plane home. It was a strange feeling. It felt like she had been torn away from Gaz even though they had shared the same plane and were going to the same place. The shared night had been a special secret they hid from everyone. Elena could only hope that their discreet glances at each other didn't give it away.
The sterile hallways and orderly barracks felt like a surreal backdrop to the chaotic events that had unfolded less than a day ago. The base moved through their routines, exchanging nods that held a mix of fatigue and lingering disbelief. Despite that, Elena hoped that gossip of their so-called 'adventure' hadn't reached everyone's ears.
It felt like a TV static was playing in Elena's ears and only fading out once her name was called out.
''Sergeant Morgan?'' the nurse questioned.
Elena stood up, having sat at the chair for a while, waiting her turn for the checkup. Her eyes met with Soap's as the man left the office and walked past her.
''You're gonna be all right,'' he quietly said, patting her passing shoulder.
Elena nodded quietly and bit her lip, going through the half-open door.
The sterile white walls of the medical examination room seemed to close in around Elena as the doctor scrutinized her chart.
"Elena, let's discuss your physical condition first," the doctor began, studying the chart. "The cuts and bruises, while extensive, should heal with time."
"Good to hear," Elena replied, nodding.
The nurse, clad in her medical scrubs, efficiently tended to Elena's wounds, occasionally exchanging glances with the doctor.
"Now, let's talk about your... mental state..." the doctor said, leaning back. "Captain Price briefed us on the nature of your mission and the challenges you faced."
"I'm holding up, Doctor. Mentally, at least," Elena said, meeting her gaze.
Raising an eyebrow, the doctor continued.
"Enduring torture is not something to take lightly. It's okay not to be okay."
"I understand that, Doctor. But strangely, I do feel.. okay. I'm fine... Considering everything," Elena replied, smiling faintly and hoping that it would aid in ending the conversation.
The doctor and nurse exchanged a look, their concern evident. The doctor leaned forward, continuing with her questions.
"Have you been experiencing nightmares, flashbacks?" she asked.
"No, nothing like that. I'm holding it together," Elena replied, shaking her head.
"These things can surface later. We have counsellors available if you ever need to talk," the doctor advised.
"I appreciate that, Doctor, but honestly, I'm fine. For now, at least," Elena assured them, hoping that no more questions would be asked.
The nurse finished treating her wounds, handing Elena a prescription for pain relief and antibiotics. Elena thanked them both, assuring them that she would take care of herself. As they exited the room, the doctor's concern lingered, understanding the weight of Elena's ordeal.
