SINCE SHE BASICALLY OWED HER BROTHER FOR ETERNITY, Charlie was the sibling forced to endure the Historical Society's Tea Party at her house. There were no other people her age, so she had to stick by her mother's side the entire time. Currently, they were speaking to some guy named Elijah who was writing a book. The Lockwood woman questioned, "Have you spent much time in Richmond for your book? There's such a wealth of history there."
"No, I'm focusing mostly on the smaller regions of Virginia," he informed her before smirking at her daughter, which made her a little uncomfortable considering she had no clue who this man was. "Lots of research. Strictly academic."
"That's fascinating," Carol responded, nodding slowly.
Elijah smiled politely at her before gesturing around the very large mansion. "Carol, this is such a lovely house you have. Would you mind showing me a little bit?"
"I actually have to greet the other guests, but I'm sure Charlotte will be more than happy to help," the woman told him, volunteering her daughter for the task. "Right, Charlie?"
"Sure, Mom," the girl responded, trying to sound as nice as she could. She definitely could not have said no because that would be rude, and her mother raised her better than that even though her father was the king of being rude. He practically invented it.
"Why, thank you, Charlotte." The man beamed at her gratefully, but she was still a little confused. Her mom left them, and Elijah reached out his arm for her to take. She did so, again, not wanting to be rude, and they started walking around the house. As they passed the kitchen, he commented, "So, I heard that you have had some wolf problems lately."
She tensed up for a second before realizing that he would be able to feel her do so because of them touching. She informed him, "Yes, we have, but we are trying to get them under control."
"I hope you had nothing to do with that," he said, and that really confused her. What did he mean by that? Why would the mayor's daughter be involved with some random wolf killings that had been happening?
"Why would you think—" she cut herself off as realization crossed her face. She yanked her arm away from the man and backed up against the wall that separated them from the living room. She muttered, "Oh, my God."
