CHARLIE REALLY DID NOT WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL. However, she knew that her mother would kill her if she did not go to her memorial service and drag Tyler along with her. They were in the gym, and the two siblings were squeezing each other's hands and making sure that neither of them fell apart. The students were lighting candles in glass cups as part of the service, but that was too much for either of them to handle. They just had to sit there and make it through.

"Carol Lockwood always said that togetherness in times of tragedy leads to healing, that one community is stronger than a thousand of its members," Sheriff Forbes told the school. She was standing at the podium and speaking. "But how does a community stay strong after losing its leader? And Carol was so much more than a leader; she was an open-minded friend and a concerned mother, taken from us too soon by a terrible accident."

Tyler, finally having enough, stood up and pushed past his sister and his girlfriend. "Screw this."

"What? Tyler? Tyler?" Caroline whispered after him, but he was already on his way out of the gym. She sighed, and Charlie saw that the sheriff noticed him leaving.

"Please join me in observing a minute silence in her memory. Everyone put their heads down and fell silent for a moment, and Charlie tried to block out all of the whispers of people around her, talking about her and her mother like they knew either of them. "Thank you so much. In the wake of this tragedy, the town has selected an interim mayor. Many of you may already know him. Please welcome Mr. Rudy Hopkins."

"Thank you so much, Sheriff. Carol Lockwood put this town first. That's why I'm here to talk to you guys. You folks are the future of Mystic Falls..." his voice grew quiet as she got up and grabbed her bag before heading out as well. She made it through the memorial, but she knew that she woud not be able to stand the new mayor, even though it was Bonnie's dad, talking about how they needed to moer forward.

Charlie made it home, and she was practically drowning in papers. She had to sign all of these things and get the funeral for her mom ready, and she was very overwhelmed. Tyler and Caroline were supposed to help her, but she had called and texted them about a hundred times with no answer.
