CHARLIE AND JEREMY KEPT MAKING EYE CONTACT. Matt, Charlie, and Jeremy were putting boxes in the back of a car for some memorial that the student council wanted to do. The Lockwood girl kept looking up at him and smiling when they made eye contact, and he kept finding excuses to brush his hand against hers or stand next to her so that their shoulders touched.

They were being kind of obvious, but if Matt noticed it, he did not say anything. As he loaded another box, he asked, "So, what are these again?"

"They're paper lanterns. The student council made them for after the Memorial. We light them up in honor of all the dead," the Gilbert boy answered. The night before, Pastor Young along with a bunch of other Council members had died in a fire apparently caused by a gas leak in the farm where they had been keeping Elena and Rebekah when they were taken.

Charlie scoffed, shaking her head as they walked over to where the remainder of the boxes were. "Nobody thought fire might be a little inappropriate."

"Yeah, I wouldn't make that crack in front of Elena," Jeremy told her with a small smile, and she immediately felt bad. The girl must be struggling so much with the whole vampire thing. She remembered how she felt when she was first turned. It must be a lot harder for the Gilbert girl because at least when the Lockwood was turned, she was sired to Klaus and had a lot of stuff to do for him.

Matt raised his eyebrows at the Gilbert boy. He had yet to stop by and see how Elena was doing because Damon and Stefan and a lot of people blamed him for everything that happened since he was the one driving, and Stefan saved him first, per her request. "How is she?"

"I guess she's fine, considering," Jeremy responded with a shrug.

"If there's anything I can do, you know, short of giving her a ride, you'll let me know, right?" the Donovan boy requested, and it was obvious that he felt awful. "I'm only alive because she told Stefan to save me first. She's a vampire because of me, so I'd like to pay it back or forward or whatever."

"Jeremy? Charlie?" a voice called, and they all turned to see a girl standing in front of them. Charlie had absolutely no clue who she was, but did look kind of familiar. She turned to the Gilbert boy with a confused look to see him looking just as bewildered. "Picture an emo pixie cut and braces."
