A knock on my door wakes me and I turn over before seeing it is still incredibly early in the morning. I get out of bed and walk to the door opening it to see Dad standing there with a smile on his face while in his pajama pants and plain t-shirt same as me.
"Morning Buddy. I am fixing to make up some waffles. Want to join?" Dad smiles.
"Of course I will." I smile and nod. "It would feel weird if I didn't join in."
"I'll make some coffee to start." Dad turns and heads down the hall.
I go to the bathroom and pull out my hygiene bag to where I can brush my teeth and at least put on some deodorant to start the day. After breakfast I'll shower before we decorate. Just want to get to the kitchen to cook with Dad.
"Here you go. I didn't add anything since that is all for you to do."
"Thanks." I add some sugar and flavoring to the hot liquid to start the morning a little different.
I get out the fruit and start slicing them up as Dad works the batter and makes the waffles. In no time we have the fruit, waffles, eggs and sausage all made and on the table. Mama and Eve make it in the kitchen and set the table up while we were placing food down and Dad making coffee for Mama. Together we all eat and then clean in unison just to pass it by faster to where we can get to the fun part. We all go to our own rooms and ready for the day before meeting back in the living room.
"I have already brought in the boxes from the shed outback. They are sitting on the porch out there." Dad nods to the door making himself another cup of coffee.
Eve and I walk out and I carry them in all the way as Mama and Dad come to help. Eve sits on the couch and starts to open the boxes. She starts on the lights box and I grimace when seeing several broken lights.
"Uh. Mama?" I call out and as I see her bringing in the last box from hers and Dads room that they keep in the closest. That box holds the handmade crafts they put up every year.
"What's wrong?" Mama puts the box on the chair not being used.
"Several lights are broken." Eve and I answer together as Eve pulls them out of the box completely.
The three of us let out a sound as we see more lights shattered.
"Those are old as ever. I think we bought those when Eve was just a toddler. The lights have been replaced so many times and I know we are out of those type of bulbs and I couldn't find any last year." Dad answers walking in.
"That is why we were short on lights last year." Mama shakes her head and smiles.
"I can run out and get more Mama." I offer and she nods.
"I will come with you." Eve pipes up.
"Perfect so any lights style lights will do but please get at least one thing of the multicolor at the very least not everything has to be white. I will get these placed out then. How about some cinnamon sugar cookies by the time you two get back?" Mama looks to Eve and I.
"I wouldn't ever complain." I sigh at the thought of those cookies only ever made this time of year.
"I will help you out Holly." Dad smirks.
"No you will distract me." Mama laughs.
"Gross! We have to leave now Bub before they get rated x on us." Eve coughs and is quick to drag me with her to the front door where we throw on our shoes and make it to my car.
I make sure Eve is buckled up before making it down the road to the store. Sure in a way I have thought of getting a truck since being a man and all, now Dad has a nice one but for me it was smarter to get a car. It saves on gas mileage because the prices have been ridiculous and I was thinking logically if the sales don't do well at least I have a cheaper option incase things get tight for some reason.
Eve and I get out of my car once parked, I walk next to her as we make the way in the store. We make our way to the holiday decorations.
"Which aisle are the lights?" Eve mumbles.
I shrug. "Guess is as good as mine. I would have thought you and Mama had done been here walking around just for the fun of it since they have been out before Thanksgiving." I snicker.
"No we were going to like we normally do but between work for both of us we never got too."
"I can't say much because I hadn't either." I sigh and seems weird how one thing we try to do every year didn't happen this year. We have just been busy this month.
Part of my busy was staying that way to keep things off my mind also. At times it seems so far off and ridiculous to be back to knowing at my age when having thought it be many years in the future still.
Eve and I walk through the aisles while I hold a handle held shopping carrier rather than a push cart.
"Oh Nicolas look at this." Eve points out a small ornament out of all the ones around us as we slowly move through the aisles until we find the lights.
"That is cute." I smile and nod.
It is a small ornament with a medical symbol and I know it is Mama's doctor sign.
"Get it. I think it will be perfect for the new ornament of the year."
Eve nods and puts it in the carrier. "She is always making sure the ornament is to do with either of us so it is fitting to get one for her."
Finally after all the decorations and the very last aisle we find the lights. Eve and I get to looking over all the options and discussing them when I see someone that I hadn't seen since the appointment.
"Hello Ms. Ambrose." I nod to her and she moves to look over at me with a smile.
